Exclusive: MasterChef Australia will indeed have a new home in 2013 with the building that has been its home for four seasons no longer available for filming.
The site in Doody Street, Alexandria, has been leased for the past four years but has been sold to new owners who aren’t interested in continuing the with the show, which films for several months across the year.
Talk of the show’s future has speculated about a shift to the Melbourne Showgrounds, which prompted New South Wales politicians to wax lyrical about the value of the multi-million dollar production, and its jobs, to the State.
TV Tonight understands Shine producers are looking at options in both Sydney and Melbourne, but the southern state, which is home to all three judges and producer Margie Bashfield, could help give the show a helpful makeover for its 5th season.
As well as being considered the “food capital” Melbourne is also home to the biggest TV audience in the country. The Block scored two big seasons by switching to the south but returns to New South Wales for 2013.
MasterChef‘s final episode at Alexandria will be the current All Stars finale, to air on Sunday night.

Well, as Melbourne has just topped 140 rivals to be crowned the most liveable city in the world for the 2nd year running…I guess they have to be the front runner.
I wouldn’t mind seeing MC shift to Melbourne. A change of scenery could bring a bit of fresh air to the show.
Haha, doody…
I can see why Melbourne would work better. Shame to see Masterchef HQ go though.
Melbourne may be the biggest TV audience in the country, but it certainly isn’t the most lucrative market for advertising dollars. Ten would be wise to bear that in mind.
The “food capital” claim. Pfft. Melbourne is the self-proclaimed capital of everything.
If it moves to Melbourne I would expect some kind of AFL footy pie making challenge. The contestants have to serve 80,000 fans the the MCG.
If it does move to Melbourne, they definitely can’t do those beautiful harbour shots anymore. Would be good to see more Melbourne based chefs.
