Seth MacFarlane to host 2013 Oscars

Hit TV creator is announced as host of cinema's biggest night.

Did not see this one coming…

Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show, creator Seth MacFarlane will host the 85th Oscars in February, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has announced.

MacFarlane, who also has a box office hit with his raunchy, R-rated comedy hit Ted, has previously hosted the 2010 Writer’s Guild awards, Comedy Central roasts and Saturday Night Live. He was also the presenter who had microphone problems at the Emmys until he walked to another one.

No doubt the move is also to continue to target a young demographic for the event for broadcast TV.

“We are thrilled to have Seth MacFarlane host the Oscars,” said the telecast’s producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh.”

“It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars,” said MacFarlane in a statement. “My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen roast.”

The Oscars will be telecast take place on February 24th (US).

  1. No one seems to have eluded to it but I am sure they will incorporate his excellent singing, his smoother then Sinatra style is just that and he even throws in a little Scat.
Here he is doing a little Deano, definitely the most talented alrounder in Tinsel town.

  2. He is a great choice!

An incredibly talented person and entertainer.

He also checks the box of get someone kind of young and hip. While they are also a good old fashion entertainer.

He certainly holds the potential to be one of the best hosts in hears. As for those saying, “connection to movies.” Well people like Conan, Letterman have no connection to movies and have hosted it. So it’s irrelevant.

  3. I’m with Steveany. If I could be shocked by watching someone tell a joke it would have been during the Charlie Sheen Roast. Could. Not. Believe. but my stomach muscles were a little sore afterwards.

Obviously won’t be quite the same hosting the Oscars but hopefully he can manage the level that Ricky Gervaise did with the Golden Globes.

  4. What an odd choice. I am not a fan of his animated show (I realise there are more than one but apart from different titles they basically are all the same show) but what is his connection to the movies (beside that teddy bear thing earlier this year)?

  5. Well, that’s great news!
I think this guy is hilarious & very clever to boot.
I watched that Charlie Sheen roast, and while it was borderline offensive and quite nasty, I almost wet myself laughing out loud. Probably says a lot about me, doesn’t it? ;-)
