New Telethon record at $16.8m

Seven's WA Telethon raises $16.8m for charity, including a final $1M donation from Kerry Stokes.

Channel Seven’s WA Telethon broke another record last night raising $16,805,622 for Princess Margaret Hospital and child health research.

It topped last year’s record of $13.47 million.

The two day event ended with Seven West Media Chairman Kerry Stokes donating $1M to the appeal.

$1 million donations were also contributed from Crown Perth, businessman Tim Roberts, WA Governor Malcolm McCusker and the McCusker Charitable Foundation, and the Burswood Entertainment Complex.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard kicked off the donations on Saturday night with a $1.5 million pledge.

The event also included a live cross to Elton John as he opened the new Perth Arena, reminding many of Michael Jackon’s famed appearance at Telethon decades ago.

Seven stars were out in force for the event which enjoys extraordinary support by the people of Western Australia.

  1. Excellent result for the guys at TVW7 and all the volunteers etc

$16m actually exceeds what the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal got this year in Victoria which is an amazing result for WA given the smaller population, but then again the RCH Appeal probably didn’t get a $1m donation from the network boss or $1.5m from Ms Gillard either – but even taking that into account the WA community are putting us Victorians to shame in their generosity.

  2. It was another fantastic effort! They also did a send off to John Crilly who I think is retiring. He has worked on Telethon for nearly 30 years and has worked in Melbourne with Don Lane and Graham Kennedy to name a few. He was also portrayed in Howszat.
