ABC1 gets Wednesday Night Fever

ABC1 announces a new late night, weekly comedy, combining political impersonations, satirical characters and live musical comedy.

2013-04-19_0941ABC1 has announced a new late night, weekly comedy series, Wednesday Night Fever, combining political impersonations, satirical characters and live musical comedy.

With an ensemble cast and host together in front of a live studio audience, the show will hash out the week’s political and cultural events.

To be produced by Quail Television (At Home with Julia), the show may well be the closest thing we have to our own Saturday Night Live, and is tipped for a 9:30pm timeslot. A cast is yet to be announced.

Creator/Executive Producer Rick Kalowski said, “Defamation lawyers contemplating a first class ski trip to Aspen should book with confidence. This is your year.”

Executive Producer Greg Quail said, “We’re still searching for performers willing to join the witness protection program right after the first episode goes to air.”

ABC TV’s Head of Entertainment, Jennifer Collins said, “Wednesday Night Fever promises to entertain and delight audiences with a provocative mid-week serve of satire and musical comedy.

“There’s a new wave of young comedic talent in Australia and this series is the perfect vehicle to showcase them, while playing alongside some of Australia’s more established comedians.”

Thanks for the information. As I’ve mentioned previously it makes me want to flick over plus avoid the channel during prime time and any time they feel like doing those tricks. So the research was a bit faulty. Plus I’ve noticed they don’t mess with the credits of their shows.

Also if they care to research Coronation Street they’ll find people in Britain by the millions use the end credits to brew coffee or tea or something else. The power company has to add power to allow that to happen. So if the viewers are not given a chance to grab a drink or snack then they’ll miss an ad by logical inference. It was on one of the documentaries they aired on the ABC. The one that showed Britain from the air if they care to research it.

Although I’ll just say I mainly like enjoying the end credits and the ads unless someone messed with the credits then I want to flick over immediately. Which is often what I do. Sorry I was trying not to get upset again.

  2. A, I have written to The ABC concerning the squooshing of credits and promos and voice over many times. The email person told me that people need to know what is on next, (in case they change channels??) and their research told them that this was what people wanted. No amount of replies from me could elicit any other information. I hate it too. Apparently the Tuesday evening repeat of Doctor Who is unsullied by any interruptions thus far.

  3. I’m with those that think it sounds good. Although I can’t watch it if they play around with some of their shows like QI and Doctor Who. I did notice that it played up this week for the Doctor Who credits. It not only shrank and muted the end credits but also all of the following ads afterwards. Plus the start of the next show. I then flicked over so don’t know how long it took to fix it.

By the way if they care at all about what I like about what they do. I prefer when after the credits are over they announce the Now, Next, and Later shows. Also at 8.30pm they announce what’s on ABC1 and ABC2. That was a great idea and quite sensible. I love it when channels are sensible. Also as a viewer I like to concentrate on the TV Show only during the show and what’s next afterwards. Because it’s far more relaxing, enjoyable and informative. Also less likely to go wrong like it did with Doctor Who.

P.S. If you are wondering why I’m less emotional I’ll just say messing up Doctor Who was like thinking that playing around with thermonuclear bombs would be a fun idea. It’s not but it did cause an explosion.

  4. Sounds good – I love The Thick of It, and also VEEP (on Pay).
However, a locally produced show like this produced for the ABC? Any chance it won’t be yet another pro-leftie ABC spew?

  5. It would have to be better than some of the current fare offered as comedy. A number of reviewers recommended Portlandia, on ABC2 last night. Well, carve my face in stone! We couldn’t raise one smile (I lie, there was one half smile). It was dreadful.

In watching that, we missed half the ancient replay of Fast Forward, which is still pretty funny (mostly), 25 years later. (You have to be old enough to appreciate the political elements of FF).
