Desert War: sneak peek

Video: ABC marks ANZAC Day with a dramatised documentary on the campaign of Tobruk.

Next week the ABC marks ANZAC Day with Desert War, the first of a 2 part dramatised documentary on the campaigns of Tobruk and Alamein.

The first part looks at the small port of Tobruk on the Libyan coast where German General Erwin Rommel hoped to drive the allies out of North Africa, and perhaps out of the war itself. But standing in his way were 25,000 Australian and British soldiers.

In addition to dramatic reconstructions, this features archival footage and interviews with veterans who share personal stories from the front lines.

It also explores the complex links between political leaders, senior commanders and intelligence services which continually influenced the campaign.

This is produced by Electric Pictures from WA (Skippy: Australia’s First Superstar, Bom Bali, Jandamarra’s War) and narrated by Humphrey Bower.

8:30pm Thursday, 25 April and May 2 on ABC1.

  1. I’m glad the North African campaign is getting some limelight. Enough already about Kokoda and Gallipoli.

North Africa was the pivotal battle of WWII as it denied the Germans the resources they needed for world conquest. The Germans needed to take Egypt as a gateway to Iran and Iraq’s oil fields. Then they were going to link up with the rest of the German army in the Caucasus (having captured their oil fields), which would have monopolised the world’s oil supply. The twin efforts of the Russians at Stalingrad and the British and ANZACs in North Africa stopped the Germans. The Germans knew they had lost the war at this point. Sorry for the long post!
