More rumours on new breakfast offering at TEN

James Mathison is linked to TEN's new breakfast offering whether he likes it or not.

2013-05-25_0225There is speculation today that TEN could launch its next breakfast TV offering in the fourth quarter of the year.

But Adam Boland told News Limited, “We honestly haven’t made a decision about an on air date.”

If the show is on air by December it could pick up some traction over summer, when hosts on rival programmes start taking holidays.

Boland is also developing a partner morning programme for TEN (despite the network foolishly dumping The Circle last year).

Former Australian Idol co-host James Mathison is said to be among early contenders to host the new breakfast show, chasing 18-49 year olds.

Mathison was one of the 5 names originally announced as part of the core team for The Project.

  1. Amanda Keller seemed to fit in perfectly when she was a guest host on The project a couple of weeks ago and she would be a perfect fit for this new breakfast show

  2. A breakfast show targeted at 18-49 year olds? Reminds me of the comedian on Ray Martin’s Midday Show who called the show Good Morning Australia for the unemployed.

  3. @ SottoVoce

You seemed to have forgotten the work for the dole “climate change green army conscripts” who will be out in the Mulga planting trees, well out of the reach of the soon to come, second rate digital network coverage that seems to only target the concrete jungles of major cities?

  4. If this is a run a name up the flagpole exercise, I suggest they go no further than “Half Mast” to save the need to lower it back down to half mast, or even lower, to enable the complete swap to a full white flag, before another ratings season begins, depending of course, that network Ten does not again ignore valuable feedback from viewers during the virtually entire Paul Henry debacle.

Hopefully the only thing that may be different this time for Ten and new EP Adam Boland , is that if any starting date is after the 14-9-2013, both Paul Henry and Andrew Bolt would have passed their “Use By Date” and hopefully ‘ vested interests agenda’s’ will be totally different this time round, or they may even have eyes on entire networks of their own, that will probably come on the ‘Open Market” after the 14-9-2013.

Unfortunately I think I have seen enough of his “Chameleon” performances on several networks, and unfortunately his practice of changing positions and attitudes to suit the occasion etc, make work well for each individual isolated performance, but would quickly be exposed on a 5/7 regular morning programme such as a breakfast format.

  5. Mathison looks half a sleep at the best of times. Imagine waking up and seeing him half a sleep with his boring sleepy tone. On the other hand Andrew Gunzberg who’s in USA, would be a better choice. The problem with Australian TV there isn’t that many people who have had a go in TV. Maybe we should unearth a new face and grow the program from there.

  6. So the same old names go round & round…James Matheson as host of a breakfast show interviewing politicians & the like…Don’t make me laugh.

Even if going for a younger demographic you still need someone with a journalism/news background despite what the hosts of The Project tell you.

Maybe someone like Matt Doran & Natasha Belling…they had great chemistry when they read the weekend news.

Ten please don’t give us another morning infomercial show. There are more than enough. I know they are a cash cow though.

  7. I’m not going to criticise any one in particular, as it takes all kinds of folk and their opinions and choices to make our world interesting, however the following needs to be made clear.
With all due respect Mr. Mathieson was and still is one of the biggest drips on television and I thought you David would be aware that the Circle was axed because it simply did not rate. For Ten to retain it would have been even more foolish.

  8. James Mathieson as host? Nooooooo! He’d have to be one of the most boring hosts around. Look at his recent outings on Can of Worms. And note the ratings tumble.

  9. @Buddy029 – Kim Watkins? She started with Nine at the age of 12. She has 3 children who keep her busy. Kim turned down the opportunity to co-host Breakfast. Went to Kathryn Robinson.

  10. I too wonder why TEN would bother with a breakfast program – surely spending that money on better evening programs, where it matters most it seems, would be a better option.

  11. Ten should bring back Kim Wilkins (think that is her name) I enjoyed watching her in the morning. She was with David Reyene, 9am I think. Where is she hiding anyways?

  12. I’ve find James quite funny, even witty, when he’s been a guest on shows. But he was a bit boring during his recent hosting stint on Can of Worms. I think his success on the new morning show depends on who he’s working with, on-screen chemistry, etc.

  13. The best breakfast show is on the ABC. Why does Ten think they need to contribute to more of the garbage from the commercial networks.

  14. Agree with Nic C-James Matheison wouldn’t make a great host, but maybe he could make regular apparances on the new program, like he does on The Project and Weekend Sunrise.

  15. I’d watch if James was involved… the show needs to be edgy (not embarrassing like whats his face on the old Breakfast show.. the New Zealand guy, can’t remember his name) and have a point of difference from the stuffed shirts on 9, 7 and the ABC.

  16. I personally loved the Breakfast format which was targeted at the 18-49 demo, but unfortunately due to a certain host it lost viewers. But Jimmy is a terrific host, and I personally think if he is paired with a strong co-host it could really work. But like all things, time will tell.

  17. No disrespect to Mathison, but I don’t really think he would be interesting as a breakfast host.
Depends who he would be paired with but losing interest…
