Renewed: DCI Banks

ITV has renewed drama series DCI Banks for a third season.

2013-06-14_1946Last week ITV formally announced drama series DCI Banks was renewed for a third season.

There will be 3 x 2-part mysteries following Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks (Stephen Tompkinson) with production due to commence in Yorkshire this August.

DCI Banks has become a firm favourite amongst the ITV Drama audience and I’m very pleased we have commissioned a third series,” said ITV’s Director of Drama Steve November. “The new stories will pose searching questions for Banks as ultimately he’s forced to take extreme action to keep his team together.”

Executive producer Andy Harries added: “I’m delighted by the continued success of DCI Banks. Stephen Tompkinson and the whole team have turned a hit series of novels into an international success story that began, like so many of the great TV detectives, on ITV.”

It airs in Australian on ABC1.

DCI Banks rated fairly well 895k (787k + 108k) on June 1st. So the ABC can’t be unhappy with it.

Perhaps the ABC bought one season to see how it would go and are saving the S2 for a later date when they need new content. Or they have spent their budget for new shows at the moment. Or they are waiting for cable to finish showing S2 before non-exclusive rights become available.

Programmers never reveal that sort of information.

  2. So Andrea Lowe (pictured) returning?
She left at the start of S2 when she got pregnant and they introduced Catherine Catz as Bank’s partner.

The ABC has shown the TVM plus the first series as 90 minute single episodes so far. No word on S2.

The writing and direction are a bit uneven but is the show is OK. And makes a change from the ABC’s Midsomer Murders repeats.

  3. This is good news, I really enjoyed the first series which ABC1 recently wrapped up, conveniently playing the double episodes as a single run each week. I’m yet to watch the final episode which is sitting on the PVR.
Not sure why ABC1 did not immediately continue with season two, which was shown in the UK from October last year.
