Anthony Albanese becomes new Communications Minister

The Deputy Prime Minister replaces Stephen Conroy as Communications Minister -but for how long?

2013-07-01_1223Officially the website for the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy still carries the name Stephen Conroy as its Minister but today Anthony Albanese assumes the role.

The Deputy Prime Minister has been member for the Sydney seat of Grayndler since 1996 but this is the first time he has taken the tricky portfolio – in addition to his Infrastructure and Transport portfolio.

Sitting high on his agenda will presumably be the NBN rollout, whether the 75% reach rule for should be abolished, and the media reforms -several of which had to be abandoned under the current political climate.

But Albanese may end up holding the portfolio for a matter of months while the nation awaits an election date, which must be held before November 30.

  1. When you look at this guy you don’t think “technology”, could be even worse than Conroy. Atleast he (they) will be in opposition soon.

  2. When I first became interested in politics the Communications portfolio was attached to Transport and Albanese is the first minister to hold both Transport and Communications simultaneously since 1993.
