“You’ll Never Walk Alone”

Video: It's impossible not to be impressed by the sight of 95,000 people singing at the MCG.

I didn’t see this moment at the Melbourne Victory vs Liverpool F.C. match this week.

But it’s impossible not to be impressed by the sight of 95,000 people singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at the MCG.

A television highlight.

Pick up at 4:00 minutes.

  1. Apparently the players were just as astounded and it was the largest crowd they have ever played before. Plaudits to the Melbourne sporting public – amazing effort. Listening to that gave me goose bumps. I know it’s far from the same thing but being a Pies fan, the majority of a crowd singing the slow Collingwood chant is pretty awesome and it pisses off the opposition.

  2. @rach I’m not saying change the name of the Socceroos or that people shouldn’t call it soccer, I call it soccer. I call it football as well, and I’m saying people should be able to call it football too. Some people call rugby league – football, which I find weird. I hate this debate. Call it what you want, but don’t tell others they have to call it soccer.

  3. sometimes the superlatives simply cannot describe how huge an occasion can be

a footy team 12,000 miles from home, pulling a crowd of over 95,000 who belt out the club song with such passion……where do you begin?

  4. @SamG don’t start that crap. I call it soccer and I call it football, it’s all the same. Call it what you want. The argument that it should only be called soccer here is pathetic.
I watch football/soccer, i watch football/Aussie rules. I support Adelaide United Football Club, and I support Port Adelaide Football Club. Both are football clubs, but different football codes.

  5. Indeed an iconic moment world sporting history. To be honest I never thought that this football match would attract half as many people to the MCG but to fill the stadium and then turn it into a sea of red with such a stirring rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was incredible! It bodes well for the future of the World Game in Australia.

  6. The most incredible thing i’ve seen at a sporting event in this country. It’s great football is finally getting some real coverage. Hopefully it will continue to grow.

Oh and Seven, please don’t use Giaan Rooney for any more sports coverage. Terrible.

  7. Demetriou would give his left one if AFT teams could garner this support. Just goes to show that those club ra ra songs really don’t do a great deal for supporters, but an old pop song can be inspirational.

“Land of My Fathers” at Cardiff Park by 60,000 Welshmen is pretty impressive too.
