Offspring: What did you think?

AEST Spoilers: I'm opening a post for you to respond to tonight's Offspring episode. Don't click if you haven't watched!

2013-08-06_2000_001I’ve decided to open a post on tonight’s Offspring episode in order for you to share your thoughts.

Comments are being approved tonight.

It was a helluva big move by the show and some of Asher Keddie’s finest moments. Some of her scenes (incl next week) were filmed the morning after she won the Gold Logie. A very big ask.

A full interview with producers John Edwards and Imogen Banks on why the story has taken this path will feature on Thursday morning, to avoid spoiling WA viewers.

  1. Clearly fantastic acting!
But surely the writers were seriously ill when they come to this decision..
Atleast give their relationship another season.
Why when things are only just gotten to an ok place and seem happy and then kill off a main character.. not just a main character.. a loved character.

I cant remember ever feeling this flat and sad after watching a tv show. Offspring was the highlight of my week.. always uplifting without fail.
    Now what do we do?

  2. It was quite sad but not overwhelming. It was great there were no spoilers before the episode aired but I was sure it would be Patrick. The whole premise of the show has been Nina trying to find the perfect partner and this will continue now. I would have been a lot more devastated if we had lost Billie, so glad that wasn’t the case..

  3. A brave choice to kill of Patrick, yes. Disappointing that it was him though.

The scenes after he died were brilliant, however I’m not convinced that the way he died was so brilliant… The car accident seemed so insignificant, for him to die from it seems so extreme given his injuries etc.

I think perhaps the scenario in which he died could have been a bit better. That said, I have to agree with @Ren… was definitely uncomfortable to watch and very raw.

  4. I don’t even watch the show and I checked the last 5 mins to see who died.
@Adam: Joyce’s death in Buffy was so well done. I’ve actually rewatched that scene a few times.
I wonder how it can be trending worldwide, how are others watching it? Or are they just keeping up on social media and will watch later via other means?

  5. I’m rather shocked and disappointed that they would do this after all Nina had been through.

However I was impressed how raw and sudden it all came about. As someone who’s experienced something similar in real life, it was very realistic and uncomfortable to watch.

  6. i thought the promotion was well played, after last weeks episode i was convinced it was billie. and prepared with my comment of how the promotion ruined what could have been a shock drama moment. it was a shock to me.

disappointed it was a car related death. PTTR, house husbands, downton abbey, smash, brothers & sisters. all shows these days have major deaths involving car accidents, Offspring is capable of much better, a more interesting death really would have cemented it as a memorable tv event, like the envelope-glue poisoning.

  7. Thank C****t it wasn’t Billie – that would have been the equivalent of the notorious bomb blast in Number 96 !!!!!!!

P.S. Wife is still bawling her eyes out. I comforted her with “Patrick may be gone – but you’ve still got me…”

BTW – anyone else pick a shot in the promo that wasn’t in the actual episode? Where Nina ran towards the camera mouthing the word “Billie?”.

Was that just a swerve… ? Or did I miss it?

  8. No one does drama better than Ten. Offspring should be rating over 2mill a week not trash tv which Australian viewers seem to be infatuated with.

Asher and Kate Jenkinson were brilliant. Superb writing once again. Next week is sure to be heartbreaking.
Congratulations to all involved with Offspring and Channel Ten for managing to keep the identity of the character underwraps.

  9. I’m annoyed and sad. I hope there’s a good reason, because it sucks. Definitely made a big impact, Billie dying would have been a bigger impact I think (not that i’d want either to die). But I wanted Nina to be happy.

  10. I really like the fact they bought up organ donation. I just think other tv shows have missed the mark with it.

I thought it was going to be Jimmy that died. I was surprised it was Patrick.

I wonder if Matthew chose to leave or did the writers choose to kill him off

  11. Outstanding Australian drama.

This is what should be rating over 2m a week – not all that reality rubbish.

The Secret Life of Wonderland will have big shoes to fill.

  12. I was coming here to see if you could find out if it was the writers’ decision or Matt’s? So I’ll look forward to that interview tomorrow.

Any chance Don Hany could return for the final episodes?

  13. Disappointed and a bit confused.

IIRC Offspring has only one more season to run – I think the producers will have their work cut out to make the new plot arc work satisfactorily.

They had enough potential dramatic material in Nina and her neuroses coping with motherhood without having to kill her partner off.

    Oh well.

  14. I knew it was him when the first shot in the ‘Previously on Offspring” bit was of him, but from months ago.

They could have done a better job of keeping the audience guessing.

Although sad, I think it was the only place the show could go to keep the story going.

Also, if you’re up for a laugh, check out the Facebook page. Over-reaction central!

  15. I’m sure it would have failed anyway but to be honest I think I would have rather they recast Matt Le Nevez (who has mentioned in a few articles I’ve read about spending time in LA trying to audition there, wanting to capitalise on his Offspring success) than kill off Patrick. It was a terrible ending, it felt cheap. Maybe Dr Havel will come back though!

  16. So they killed off a character? And this was meant to “change Australian drama forever” as the promo overpromised. How embarrassing. Didn’t Pack To The Bogans also kill off a character’s partner? Yawn. Game of Thrones kill a major character every other week. Offspring has a character hit by a car. Yawn.

  17. I haven’t felt that sick watching TV since Joyce Summers died in Buffy. Wow, Offspring was hard to watch. Can’t help but think this will turn a lot of viewers off, not seeing Nina have a happy ending.

  18. I was kinda hoping Nina would bite the dust, as those promos were doing my head in. Don’t tell me what I’ll be impressed by, or what I’ll be talking about “for years to come”. What hyperbole.

  19. I’m not happy with this storyline. Why can’t Nina be happy?
Will be curious to hear why they did this I suppose. I hope it just wasn’t because the actor wanted to leave the show.
