Returning: Dateline

Dateline talks to survivors of the Norwegian slaughter on the Island of Utøya, plus reaction in Indonesia to Kevin Rudd's 'PNG Solution.'

2012-09-24_0122-300x200Dateline returns to SBS ONE on Tuesday with a report from Amos Roberts (pictured) talking to survivors of the Norwegian slaughter on the Island of Utøya, plus reaction in Indonesia to Kevin Rudd’s ‘PNG Solution.’

Two years after far-right extremist Anders Breivik tried to wipe out a generation of young, left-wing politicians, killing 69 people at a summer camp on the Island of Utøya, Roberts meets survivors with a remarkable determination to fight back.

23-year-old Jorid Nordmelan, a Labour Party candidate and Utøya survivor, tells Roberts:

“I look at life differently now. I really want to fight for the values that he attacked that day. He attacked multicultural society, which I think is beautiful in Norway. And it’s important to me to fight against him.”

Jorid is one of nearly 40 survivors who are on the campaign trail as Norway prepares for next month’s parliamentary election.

Another survivor of the shooting, Ylva Schwenke, told Roberts: “I bear my scars with dignity because I got them for something I believe in.” Ylva was shot five times in the Utøya attack.

Dateline will also feature a report from the US where children as young as six are taking part in highly-controversial ‘cage fights’, and David O’Shea reports from Indonesia on confusion and anger amongst asylum seekers and government officials as they grapple with the impact of Kevin Rudd’s ‘PNG Solution’.

Tuesday 6 August at 9.30pm on SBS ONE.
