Evergreen Larry Emdur has recorded a late night talk-show pilot.

The Morning Show host recorded is pet project on Friday in St. Leonards with guests Guy Sebastian, Samantha Armytage and Unzipped author Manon Youdale under the guise of Larry on Late.

Lazza told told the Sunday Telegraph he got some advice from Rove McManus.

“He was the first person I called when I found the list again six months ago. We had lunch and I ran him through the idea … he’s very much been the late night guy in Australia for the past decade and has remained his own boss all that time. I admire him for that,” he said.

A Seven spokesperson said: “When Larry told us this idea was on his list, we thought it was classic Larry. We were more than happy to join in the fun and offer any help he needed. He’s in charge of this one though and we’re certain he and his audience will enjoy the experience.”

  1. Called up Rove McManus? Why? To get advice on how to host a spectacularly bad show on Fox that no one watches? Actually I wouldn’t know how bad it is because I’ve never watched him n Fox.
The few minutes I saw of him on 10 a few years back convinced me that Rove is as bad as Daryl Somers. Pulling goofy face is his idea of witty repertoire. It all goes to show just how shallow the talent pool is here. Same old same old faces on a constant merry go round of the same old genres. No wonder TV ratings continually march backwards.

  2. We used to watch a lot of late night TV back when Steve Vizard was in the hosting seat.

Late night TV is quite irreverent in terms of humour. It’s certainly not as highly strung as morning TV can be. There’s a greater allowance for surrealism and leftfield content. It may work well for Larry. He has a natural entertainer quality about him. I think he could loose a bit more personality than is allowed, or is confined to on morning or daytime.

  3. no its a terrible idea larry shouldnt be a late night talk show host because he’s terrible & plus the guess on he’s wouldnt be celebrities channel 7 needs to get the rights to broadcast either jimmy fallon, or jimmy kimmel since CH9/GO has conan, & CH10/11 has david letterman,& craig ferguson better yet channel 7 should get & broadcast saturday night live instead they want to waste more money & give another hosting gig on terrible talent

  4. I hope it dose work for Larry, I remember when he was on Ch 9 and filled in for Darryl as host on HHIS a couple of times.
I liked how he did that show and I think Larry would be a great talk show host. Also I think Larry should return as a game show host to, I think Ch 7 should of gone with Larry instead of Grant on MDM.

  5. Yeah, this could potentially work. This kind of show could temper the self-confidence he has and channelling it to a workable format. They could do worse than getting pioneers like Steve Vizard or Darryl Somers as EPs (or even in Steve’s case maybe also as a writer). For a late talk show, I think Steve really got the format right (maybe even better than Rove) and Darryl like him or loathe him had the variety style about right (HHIS used to be the first port of call for touring artists etc.). Jennifer Keyte could even reprise her ‘hostess with the mostest’ role

  6. I disagree Shaz. I think Night Talk shows work Don Lane is proof of that, as long as they are not too late, 9.30pm is a good start time. As for guests we can use satellites and go anywhere. I think this is a good idea as long as Larry does meaty interviews and not shallow like Ellen

  7. They should stick him with Andrew O’Keefe as a duo.
I remember they hosted part of the Good Friday Telethon together a couple years ago, and I thought I was going to pee my pants they were so funny together. Good chemistry.

  8. Late shows do not properly work in Australia because they only do self promotion and very few serious International people come here.

Can you imagine Ch7 letting someone come on their show to promote something on ch9?

  9. @michaelOz I think that is the way it will go for many shows now, to get revenue with ad skipping they’re will be more sponsored shows. Bit like in the old days how Tonight Shows used to do sponsored ads live and maybe one day we’ll see a return to Soap Operas being sponsored by Soap Companies and even more product placements in others.

As for Larry Emdur doing a Tonight Show I could see that working, I don’t mind him myself, though I have never seen his Morning Show as I am not home at that time of day (only seen him host Game Shows and the odd Telethon).
