TEN appoints Heads of Comedy, Entertainment & Factual and Development

Good news from TEN today with executive appointment as part of a wider increase in domestic production.

TEN winter party 009Good news from TEN today with the appointment of Heads of Comedy, and Entertainment and Factual as part of a wider increase in domestic production.

The Australian reports Programming Chief Beverley McGarvey (pictured, left) has announced the promotion of Executive Producer Stephen Tate to head up Entertainment and Factual Entertainment and the elevation of EP Paul Leadon to Head of Comedy.

Lisa Fitzpatrick (pictured, right), who was previously head of production and development, becomes Director of Development.

All three will report to McGarvey.

Retaining their positions are Head of Drama Rick Maier, Head of Children’s TV Cherrie Bottger, Head of Production and Business Affairs Toni Skaife and Development and Acquisitions manager Azar Marashian.

If you are in the business of putting together a schedule of locally commissioned and produced content (and this is the only strategy that will future proof your network) you need genre heads to take responsibility for choices and execution – so it’s good to see Ten clarify the structure and reporting lines – it’s a clear signal to the production community they are back in business. Both Seven and the ABC also have this structure. Nine has evolved itself into the opposite of this structure in response to all the cost cutting over the years which goes a long way to explaining why there are no new ideas – just reheated reality and entertainment franchises previously discarded by other networks and recommissions on dramas despite clear evidence of audience fatigue.

  2. All well and good to have a head of comedy, but unless you actually make some comedy what’s the point? And I don’t mean endless panel shows and light ent, Ten, have a go at a sitcom or something why don’t ya??
