Oops. Sunrise clip on domestic violence asks “did he deserve it?”

Video: A video of a woman slapping her cheating partner in Hong Kong appeared to catch Sunrise hosts off-guard today.

2013-10-09_1335A video of a woman slapping her cheating partner in Hong Kong appeared to catch Sunrise hosts off-guard today.

In the clip the woman repeatedly slaps her partner on a public street as onlookers watch.

But when Sunrise played the clip, it was pretty clear it was the first time they had seen it.

“What’s happening?” asked a confused Larry Emdur.

“Oh dear me!” Sam Armytage said as she described, “The incident drew a crowd and police arrested the woman and charged her with assault…”

“Is this not a joke?” asked Natalie Barr.

“No. The clip has become a viral hit, but it’s quite serious,” a stunned Armytage replied.

But it was Natalie Barr’s comment “Well the question is did he deserve that?” that drew a reaction.

Viewers have begun posting on the show’s Facebook page that making light of domestic violence and victim blaming is never ok.

In your segment on a domestic violence video filmed in Hong Kong. “..well the question is did he deserve that?”The question is, what the hell is wrong with you? Victim blaming at it’s wost.

Dear Natalie Barr,
You are a disgrace…”..question is did he ‘deserve’ that.?..”
Please leave Sunrise and go join Ten’s The Circle. It looks like it’s more your speed…
Cheers.

Wow. Never expected to get a dose of misandry from Natalie.

Cannot believe nat just said “he probably deserved it” if one the men said that about a female getting smacked in the face they would not be on the show anymore!

Might have been given better context if the hosts had been informed about what was coming. Instead it seems to have come out of left field.

  1. @David Knox. What do you mean threw them a curve ball? I don’t think that is an excuse. Often when not having time to think we found out what people really think.

Damage has been done and she needs to apologise, excuse are not good enough.

  2. Natalie Barr’s comment was disgraceful. If all the genders were reversed here the commentator would be fired. She needs to apologise and Sunrise needs to do piece on DV against men to raise public awareness.

  3. DV is totally unacceptable ….. unless of course men are the victims of it. Take a look at the WA State Government DV helpline web page and the message is black & white: “Victims? Only Women. Perpetrators? Only Men”. Government sponsored misandry!

  4. We’re all blaming Nat while ignoring the fact that the producers are the ones who injected humour into the discussion by putting “here’s a reminder of the danger of a woman’s scorn” up on the autocue for Sam to read.

It was also included in a section of the show that’s much lighter and more relaxed. They’re all obviously having a laugh before this story, and were in the joke-y frame of mind when this was thrown at them.

Nat responded as many of us would have out in a similar situation, so why don’t we all jump down off our high horses.

  5. It’s how someone is raised. If they are around people who don’t use communication to deal with problems, they tend to use violence as that is all they have been shown in their own family unit.

  6. Yes, I agree anyone who misspeaks should immediately be sacked. I’d prefer to save my condemnation for those sho actually advocate or perpetrate violence.

  7. I don’t understand why they showed it at all!! What was the point? Ooh, let’s laugh at someone getting slapped!! Weird, and really offensive, even without Nat’s comment that makes it so much worse.

  8. Reverse the genders. Dude hits a woman, and a male journo asks if she deserved it.

he’d be out of a job, and family groups, feminists and the internet would (rightly) be after his blood.

But since its only violence against a man, it’s okay. Unbelievable
