Returning: Luther

One of television's most under-rated dramas, Luther, returns to screens early next month.

2013-10-13_0011One of television’s most under-rated dramas, Luther, returns to screens early next month for its third season.

Idris Elba is back in the Golden Globe winning series about the near-genius detective waging his own war on crime. As Luther walks a fine line between good and evil, will he slip into darkness?

Both Idris Elba and the series were also nominated for Emmy Awards.

Passionate, committed and just on the right side of ruthless, John Luther’s back stalking the streets of London searching for the evil that lurks among the city’s dark streets and doorways.

The first episode sees a twisted fetishist targeting young women in the capital. With London’s best detective ordered to investigate a different case, the chances of catching the killer before he strikes again are shrinking. But Luther’s biggest threat could be closer to home when it emerges that his own colleagues are willing to break every rule in the book to bring him down…

Elsewhere it looks like Luther might have finally found love, but is he ready to leave his past behind? And when a vigilante killer embarks on a crusade to punish criminals, Luther is forced to confront his own sense of morality. Can he walk the line between right and wrong and has he finally met his match?

9:25pm Friday November 1st ABC1.

  1. This is a fantastic series. Idris Elba is great as a broken, borderline genius/mad detective. I highly recommend this to anyone who hasn’t seen this yet.

The critics detested it originally describing it as a shambles, cliched and unbelievable. It did give a platform for Elba to show off the considerable power of his acting, even when given nothing substantial to work with.

It is “award winning” but that is awards for Elba for Best Actor from the Golden Globes and Outstanding Coloured Actor in TVM or Mini-series from the NAACP.

It has a very small audience, and more people talk about how cool it is because black actors still get few meaty leading roles, than actually watch it.

  3. I also watched the ABC’s recent repeat of series one, after waiting a long time for them to repeat it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will have to get the series two DVD as well to catch up in time.

  4. Each to their own I suppose. This show is not unwatchable to a vast majority. I watched this while on holiday in the UK recently and it was “such fun” as Miranda might say. Some great performances but no spoilers so watch and enjoy.

  5. It’s one of the most over-rated shows around. The plots are silly and unbelievable and their idea of drama is just having Elba yell very loudly and foam at the mouth.

It takes a grungy anti-hero to such an extreme that it becomes self-parody. It’s unwatchable.

  6. Saw the first season when it reran on ABC1 recently but the ABC did not rerun the second season afterwards.

Good thing I bought the second season DVD as it will allow me to be up to date in time for the third season on ABC1.
