Wake Up drops Natasha Exelby

Natasha Exelby is gone from TEN's new breakfast show in only its third week.

2013-10-15_1056TEN has dropped Natasha Exelby from Wake Up in a shock move announced this morning, leaving the show to Natarsha Belling and James Mathison.

The move comes in the show’s third week on air and after much publicity about the trio’s chemistry.

TEN CEO Hamish McLennan said today the show still needed some changes.

She will remain with Network Ten’s News division.

Network Ten Director of Morning Television, Adam Boland, said: “It’s important we get Wake Up right.

“I have said repeatedly that chemistry is everything at breakfast and, right now, I don’t think the balance is correct. It’s up to producers to fix those things.

“I rate Natasha, Natarsha and James extremely highly individually, otherwise they wouldn’t have been there in the first place. I also saw genuine spark during show rehearsals, but sometimes, that doesn’t translate on air. That is nobody’s fault, except mine,” he said.

“Natasha is a dear friend. She is also genuinely talented and will remain a key part of Ten into the future.”

TEN says the are no changes for new morning show, Studio 10.

  1. I don’t get all the haters for this show. But it was obvious that Natasha had to leave. She did not fit in well, and she does not sound professional, she has a very bogan voice. It will work a lot better with James and Tarsh.
I do wish they would zoom out a little on the TV when they they chat to Nuala.

  2. How the hell do you create ‘natural chemistry’ with the axe hanging over you. Absolutely no chance.

Adam Boland quite rightly takes responsibility for the change (good ‘on ‘im) and I guess if the morning shows do not lift, his position will be vunerable.

Very few people in the wider population know these shows exist

  3. What a waste of time and money these morning shows are for Channel 10. To have a host sacked from a show less than three weeks into its run is very embarrassing and bodes badly for the show.

  4. One down, two to go. If Nuala has only a modicum of intelligence she should hightail it back to 7 and leave behind that phone box of hers for the fans of this shocker to watch the show from.
At best, this ratings disaster will be lucky to reach Easter.

    @ Col Mustard,
Never mind the deck chairs, the Titanic is sinking fast and there ain’t no lifeboats.

  5. i remember seeing her on The Project promoting the show and didn’t get a good vibe from her for a morning show. am sad for her and wish her all the best. plus i’m not a fan of the way they do the news. i don’t see the point in having Nuala in Melbourne. i guess they do that so she can pre-record each states news updates. i’m still a fan of the beach backdrop!

  6. Disappointing to see this happen so early but she was a bit “deer in headlights” also…. don’t the networks do market research/testing/pre-production?

Maybe less time having social media wars with critics and more time fixing the product – they are a very long way back, and while I want to see Ch10 succeed at this (and primetime) they need to focus inward rather than out.

As a shareholder, its galling watching the shareprice erode to dire levels – get your act together 10!

  7. How many millions have Ten spent on their morning programs?

First there was the Paul Henry debacle – and now this.

They had an excellent morning program with Bert Newton and then Kim and Dave … and of course the very entertaining The Circle.

They should just put cartoons on in the morning and try and win over ABC kids which is rating through the roof , rather than try to compete with Sunrise and Today.

It’ll be a lot cheaper – and will free them up to focus on their dire primetime schedule.

Sigh – you know they’ll get rid of both James and the other Natasha soon and just replace them with Sarah Murdoch and Andrew Bolt.

  8. Agree this might work better with 2 hosts rather than 3. The set looks tight and uncomfortable, and Natasha seemed to have a certain bogan quality about her. I do think they need to fine-tune the “local news”. Why have Nuala presenting from Melbourne when she is in front of a green screen of Flinders St station?

  9. Agree Tash should be kept on in some role – she’s fab. Two hosts will work better on that tight set, three just look uncomfortable. Hard to show chemistry when the other person is thigh to thigh. I think all three are great talent and getting better as weeks roll on.
Something does need to be done about the audio during the News though.

  10. She was certainly the weak link. They need to tidy up the news business as well. While the content may be localised, having local Brisbsne (in my case) news presented from in front of a screen of flinders st station and trams going back and forward doesn’t really work!

  11. Just this morning in the other posting about wake up, I mentioned how Natasha mentioned having a hamburger with the spokesperson for PETA and they should can her for this incredibly stupid tactless comment …. somebody must have been listening ….. thank you for acting on my feedback …..

  12. I agree with the move to have 2 hosts but Natasha should of been kept on as a roving reporter or something. She does have serious talent, just needs the right role. I have been flicking over to Wake Up now and then since it has started and this morning was the first time I stayed longer. Between 8am and 8.30 they offered a better product than the others so I do see hope.
