Australian Idols score at ARIAs

Once they were "snubbed" by the industry, but Australian Idol graduates were winners at last night's ARIA Awards.

2013-12-01_2222Australian Idol stars were the toast of the ARIA Awards last night with wins for Jessica Mauboy, Guy Sebastian and Matt Corby.

Jessica Mauboy won Female Artist of the Year.

Matt Corby won Song of the Year for Resolution.

Guy Sebastian won Best Pop Release and Best Live Act.

Before this year, Sebastian had been nominated 17 times and won only 2, Mauboy had won once from 12 nods and Matt Corby also had one.

The wins were a long way from Idol‘s earlier years when singers were largely snubbed by the music industry.

In 2004 Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson and fellow Idol judge Mark Holden accused the industry of snobbery since after Sebastian, Shannon Noll and Paulini were nominated in the highest-selling single and album categories, but missed out in the peer-voted awards.

In 2005 Missy Higgins said, “There’s a lot to do with image in Australian Idol.

“Obviously when you enter your music into Unearthed there’s nothing to do with what you look like or how you present yourself on television or what you dress like. It’s all to do with your composition and the way that you perform.”

Last night Higgins lost out to Jessica Mauboy.

X Factor winner Samantha Jade also won Best Video for Firestarter, voted by fans via YouTube.

  1. What do people really expect, something of Grammy calibre? It’s actually a pretty good show for what it is.

Nicely staged and a breadth of winners to appeal to everyone. The international guests were interesting too. Surprised to see they got Rodney Jerkins to come out, and Lorde was fantastic.

  2. So glad Jessica won she’s fantastic! Don’t mean to be rude but I can’t stand Missy Higgins and her music she has never anything good to say- just my opinion Missy & Delta will never make it in the U.S sorry.

  4. i enjoyed the ARIAs last night. The production and the venue was great. Looked more like a awards night then a large dinner party. I also enjoyed some of the performances. Good show hope next years is just as good.

  5. Personally, I think the ARIAs are a perfect fit for GO! and not a main channel. Would like to see it live though and not on delay.

Watched it last night and I really enjoyed it.

Good to see Guy Sebastian, Matt Corby and Jessica Mauboy win awards, they are true genuine talent from reality shows.

  6. enzso – I lasted about 5 minutes of the red carpet segment. Three giggling presenters asking international acts like Alicia Keys important questions like ‘How do you like Australia?’ and ‘Do you know any Australian music acts?’ And she responded with ‘Lorde’ – oh wait she’s from New Zealand…close enough.

No wonder this show as shafted to GO!

  7. Oh that was the ARIAS on last night. I stumbled onto GO briefly and thought it was a school awards night. Some guy called Flume was performing but he was standing in complete darkness for the entire song so I thought maybe the Year 9 kid doing lighting hadn’t turned up.
