Australian Idols score at ARIAs
Once they were "snubbed" by the industry, but Australian Idol graduates were winners at last night's ARIA Awards.
Jessica Mauboy won Female Artist of the Year.
Matt Corby won Song of the Year for Resolution.
Guy Sebastian won Best Pop Release and Best Live Act.
Before this year, Sebastian had been nominated 17 times and won only 2, Mauboy had won once from 12 nods and Matt Corby also had one.
The wins were a long way from Idol‘s earlier years when singers were largely snubbed by the music industry.
In 2004 Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson and fellow Idol judge Mark Holden accused the industry of snobbery since after Sebastian, Shannon Noll and Paulini were nominated in the highest-selling single and album categories, but missed out in the peer-voted awards.
In 2005 Missy Higgins said, “There’s a lot to do with image in Australian Idol.
“Obviously when you enter your music into Unearthed there’s nothing to do with what you look like or how you present yourself on television or what you dress like. It’s all to do with your composition and the way that you perform.”
Last night Higgins lost out to Jessica Mauboy.
X Factor winner Samantha Jade also won Best Video for Firestarter, voted by fans via YouTube.
