Airdate: The Boondocks

NITV premieres a new Anime series about an African-American family trying to find their place in a white community.

2014-02-02_1702Tonight, NITV premieres The Boondocks, a new 14 part US Anime series about an African-American family trying to find their place in a white community.

The Boondocks, a boundary-pushing adult anime, will blaze the TV screens of Australia for the first time ever on NITV.

Brothers Huey and Riley are now under the guardian of their granddad, Robert Jebediah Freeman, who moves them from the south of Chicago, Illinois, to raise them in the fictional and largely white suburb of Woodcrest.

This wicked satire about the Freemans’ adventures and misadventures explores many of the social dynamics so relevant to Indigenous Australia, centring around the African-American family trying to find their place in a white community while staying true to their culture and identity as they emerge from a past of segregation and racism.

Originating from creator Aaron McGruder’s comic strip of the same name, The Boondocks takes you on a chuckling-filled journey that explores culture and subculture, dominant ideologies, equal rights, stereotypes and history.

Episode One: The Trial of Robert Kelly

Huey and Riley find themselves on opposite sides in the sex crimes trial of R&B singer R. Kelly. Upon arriving at the courthouse, Riley immediately joins the fan protest, leaving Huey with the long list of well-known black personalities – including Rosa Parks, Cornell West, Julian Bond, Dick Gregory, and Tavis Smiley – who are voicing their displeasure with the singer’s behaviour.

Tuesday, 11 February at 9.30pm on NITV.
