The simulcast will see the game up against the Big Bash League final.

“Simulcasting the biggest match of the season across SBS ONE, SBS 2 and SBS HD is a fantastic opportunity to promote the best of the A-League to as many people as possible” said Ken Shipp, Head of Sport SBS.

SBS’s live Friday night match coverage will be hosted by SBS Host and former Socceroo David Zdrilic. He will be joined by two time A-League championship winner Clint Bolton and SBS Chief Football Analyst Craig Foster. Lucy Zelic will report live pitchside from Pirtek Stadium in Parramatta.

  1. I’m guessing that SBS are hoping that by using their main channel they will attract more viewers to their A-League coverage, which has been struggling a little of late.
But why not put something different on SBS2 that Friday instead? And make mentions throughout the coverage of the secondary channel being the regular home of Friday night matches?

I’m a huge fan of the roundball game, but think that this may alienate a few viewers.

  2. I don’t like it. I used to be glad of the alternative options on SBS1 when it was on a frequency my antenna could pick up. Either way I can’t watch it because of whatever was done to mess with the signal. I just hope on Feb 7 they fix it. Because I can’t usually watch SBS now. Although for this it wouldn’t upset me as much.

  3. I started watching A-League because it was in HD, and now record and watch it every week.

I wouldn’t have bothered if it was in SD only (yeah, I’m strange like that!).

But why are they doing the simulcast on SBS1, 2 and HD? Can’t see the point, surely SBS2 and SBS HD would be enough, or are there Digital TVs/set top boxes that only get SBS1????

  4. Everyone has access to SBS 2 now and if you could choose between watching SBS ONE and SBS HD, I’d go for SBS HD (thinking it’d always be a simulcast of SBS ONE, which it is, except on Fridays).

I quite like the fact that SBS HD is used to simulcast the A-League on Friday nights, and wish it did so over the weekend. It’s a great use of the HD channel in my opinion. If only Seven had used 7Mate to simulcast the Australian Open tennis too (however, isn’t there some new regulation that came into effect this year about channels not allowing to simulcast shows on the primary and digital channels?).

  5. Biggest match of the season? What about the Grand Final. It may be the biggest Friday night game SBS have the rights to.

Of course the BBL will thrash it. But SBS are trying to pick up viewers flicking over during ads and breaks in the BBL and hoping some of them will be interested enough to watch the game next Friday.

The A-League has been getting beaten up by the Cricket and Tennis. Last week’s game got 115k combined across SBS and Foxtel.

  6. I hope SBS made the right choice here. It should be a good game.

I know it may be just a once off, but I hope this will encourage more people to watch the A-League in the future on sbs2. Its ratings haven’t been that good lately (after a good start at the beginning of the season).
