Returning: Vikings

Vikings returns to SBS ONE for its second season later this month, in a new Monday night timeslot.

2014-03-04_2313Vikings returns to SBS ONE for its second season later this month, now in a new timeslot at 8:30pm Mondays (and you thought there was already plenty to watch there, right?). The show was SBS’ highest-rated drama in 2013.

The 8 part series marks the first MA15+ title in an 8:30 timeslot for the broadcaster, after changes to its Code of Practice classifications.

Despite SBS claiming the series will be fast-tracked, it will return the series on March 24. Season Two began in the US on February 27th.

The Nordic warriors with an insatiable appetite for brutal warfare, unrestrained passion, fierce alliances and ruthless betrayals have sailed back to local shores, ready to pillage and conquer Australian television screens.

Australia’s own Travis Fimmel (The Beast, Baytown Outlaws) returns as Ragnar Lothbrok, the restless young warrior and family man who longs to discover and triumph over new lands across the seas. Alongside Travis is another Australian, former model Alyssa Sutherland (The Devil Wears Prada, Arbitrage) who stars as Ragnar’s love interest.

In season two, Ragnar has risen to the rank of Earl, and with more power than ever before, his desire to continue to conquer the lands of the west is burning, spurred by his new alliance with King Horrik (Donal Logue, Sons of Anarchy, Coppers). Yet there is a price to pay for Ragnar’s ambition. Brothers rise up against one another, loyalties and alliances are ripped apart, plots are hatched, revenge is sought. Blood must always be spilled in the quest for greatness.

The battlefield breaks through to Ragnar’s personal life like never before as he faces off against his impulsive, wild brother Rollo (Clive Standen, Camelot, Robin Hood)) as an enemy in the opposing forces. Princess Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) threatens his marriage to ferocious shield maiden Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick, Bones, Love and Other Drugs), tearing him and his beloved bold warrior son Bjorn apart.

Rugged Norsemen and women also returning in the new season include favourites George Blagden (Les Misérables) as Athelstan, a young and not-so-innocent Monk; Jessalyn Gilsig (Glee, Nip/Tuck, Friday `Night Lights) as Siggy, beautiful wife of the late Earl Haraldson; and Gustaf Skarsgard (The Way Back, Evil) as Floki, a genius ship builder who designs the new generation of Vikings ships. New to the Vikings cast are Linus Roache (Batman Begins, Law & Order) as Ecbert, King of Wessex, a man of strength, knowledge and undisguised ambition, and Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games, Grown Ups 2) as Ragnar’s son Bjorn.

Vikings was created and written by premier international renowned historical storyteller Michael Hirst (Academy-Award winning Elizabeth, Emmy, Golden Globe nominated The Tudors). Vikings series one was a huge international success for The History Channel, and was the number one cable series in the US in 2013.

Monday 24 March at 8.30pm on SBS ONE.

  1. Hopefully we get the repeat later in the week on SBS2 that we had for the first season, because Monday night already has a lot on for many people.

Secret Squirrel – totally agree with all the points you have made.

  2. One of my favorite shows fom last year. Hopefully either Love Child or Secrets and Lies will be finished by then, cause can only record two. This viewer has still yet to see one ep of Game of Thrones.

  3. Yay! Yeah, not really fast-tracked but fast enough for me. These days I’m watching more on SBS1 and 2 than ever before and certainly more than the commercial networks where I gave up chasing shows around their schedules, sometimes double-eps, off for a week or two then back on a different day.

  4. This is great news, Vikings is a wonderful series. Something to help us cope with GoT-deprivation syndrome, thanks to Foxtel’s recent moves to encourage piracy!
