The perils of Live television.
Last night ABC2’s Tom Tilley was hosting a Live to Air discussion on Dead Drunk, ABC1’s documentary on alcohol abuse in King’s Cross, when a fire alarm at their hotel venue went off.
“We seem to have a fire alarm. I’m not sure exactly what that means or exactly what’s going to happen,” he said.
“At this stage we’re assuming it’s a test and we’ll keep going.”
But the alarm grew louder, making it impossible to continue.
“It is pretty loud. Wow. Maybe we went past the lock in?”
The show had been underway for around 45 minutes of its one-hour broadcast. Suddenly a title card went up before network promos about a minute later.
Unfortunately, it never returned, with subsequent show, a Gruen Planet repeat, too. ABC2 advised viewers of the outcome on Twitter.
There’s been a fire alarm on at the venue, we’re finding out if we can continue, stay tuned… #deaddrunk

Sadly, wild weather has caused a leak at the venue so #DeadDrunk will not be returning to air. We apologise, and thanks for watching.

All participants, patrons and crew have, of course, been evacuated safety. Thanks for your concern. #deaddrunk

We drill for fire alarms during live broadcasting actually.

It was quite the bummer; an entertaining bummer but a bummer nonetheless.
Let me get this right. ABC2 was actually showing a live forum about a program which had just been shown on another channel. What programming genius came up with this idea?
What’s wrong with a live discussion forum on a multichannel? The show raised some issues on an important social problem.
Better safe than sorry and all that.
