Angry fans petition Seven to save A Place to Call Home

Seven is under attack by fans angry over the axing of its hit drama, venting their fury online.

2014-07-12_2047Fans of A Place to Call Home remain unimpressed by Seven’s decision to cut the show loose after just two seasons, taking to social media to vent their anger.

Tonight the show starring Marta Dusseldorp and Noni Hazlehurst will wrap all its storylines with the footnote, “The End.”

Seven has indicated the decision not to pursue a third season, which had been in development, was made by the Programming department. It declined to confirm that a third season had been written by creator Bevan Lee.

Last week the show rated 957,000 viewers at the later time of 9:30pm.

But costs and an older-skewing audience are said to have sealed its fate.

There are three petitions at change.org at over 9,400 signatures while others have taken aim at Seven on the show’s official Facebook page:

I heard it is being taken off because only the elderly watch it. So what we have a entitlements too.

It is disgusting that they can cancel the best and only decent show on tv

Wanted to spend millions on interview with Shapelle Corby, failed big time, no one interested in that only channel 7. Now to axe top quality viewing show? Agree channel 7 just cannot get their priorities right.

The decision to axe it is in very poor taste. Apparently the supposed highest viewing demographic is over 55, so it’s quite discriminatory against that demographic. No one asked me if i watch it.

This gets axed and they keep producing reality crap!!!!

Why are you not creating any more seasons? I was devastated to hear this news. Where are you running your surveys because you certainly haven’t contacted me!

I cannot believe they are taking this show off,it’s really great and I am going to miss it wish something could be done to keep it going.

Rumour has it Bevan Lee has fully written a resolution in Series3, but no.. end it on a cliffhanger! Well done. could have at least sold it to someone else rather then axe it.

The best show ever leaves those sic coms for dead

There must be a mistake. Where has all this come from? I don’t beleive it!!

A superb Aussie production, very, very popular; why would they not keep it going??? We do not have near enough quality Aussie productions on our TV.

Just can’t believe that this will not continue. So much better than reality TV, quiz or cooking shows. What’s wrong with supporting people who are brilliant actors? Please, another season.

It’s the Best show on TV why axe it? Axe all; the reality shows which are too boring with all the adds and stupid nonsense that goes on between them all. I’s fake.

Maybe Foxtel with snap this show up? I’ve gone right of Channel 7 for axing this show!

Others have let their feelings known on Twitter:

The last ever episode screens at 9:15pm tonight on Seven.

  1. Unfortunately we are still caught in the grasp of inane reality television. Quality drama once again falls by the wayside which is a terrible shame.

  2. @Secret Squirrel, I bet you any money that the new dramas headed by Rebecca Gibney and Erik Thomson will not be as successful as APTCH. They may record a blip of interest to start with but will drop off very quickly.

  3. david, i have been a long time reader of your fabulous website so first let me thank you for your invaluable insight.

this is the first time ive ever commented. i like many others are upset about this esteemed program finishing up tonight as it really raised the bar. dross like love child and house husbands will never be as good as a place to call home.

@ shoudy chen, you seem to have a penchant of wishing the worst on many television shows and i dont get it. you have the option of not tuning in. its not a pseudo science.

  4. @ poida …The actors portray this era very well….in fact..I knew of a family and the character Noni plays that this could have been based on….and many others also….this is so the way things were then.

  5. Its ridiculous. The show is just brilliant and yet they think its good to axe it why? It just makes no sense what so ever. The show just keeps getting better and better. Going to be sad to see it go tonight. 🙁

  6. Pertinax is right, not enough people in the grocery-buying demos were watching it. Seven is a commercial enterprise not a charity. As someone once said “it’s not personal, it’s just business”.

Anyone accusing Seven of “showing disrespect” toward a section of its audience obviously hasn’t been paying attention to Aus FTA for the last ten years.

@J Bar – sure people *could* refuse to watch anything on Seven as a protest but most of them won’t. I see comments like that all the time and then, a couple of weeks later, the same person is complaining about something else on that channel or, sometimes, even the program that they were “never going to watch again”.

If what Seven produces in place of APTCH gets similar numbers but skews younger, I don’t think they’ll mind if half a dozen over 55’s force themselves to sit thru House Husbands in protest.

  7. As long as Seven has its tasteful priorities in the right place and they continue with the exceptional What Happens in Bali, then all will be okay with the world.

This remains one of the strangest decisions by a network in a long time. I know some executives regretted axing All Saints when it still had obvious life in it, and I fear some of them will fear the same way about this drama in the future.

  8. Seven is a commercial network not a public broadcaster. They provide entertainment at no cost to the public in exchange for being able to make a return for shareholders from it.They can fulfil the conditions of their broadcast licence in anyway they see fit.

It’s place Seven will make new Australian dramas. They could be better.

  9. I know demographics have their place and tv stations need to make money but this seems to be an incredibly discriminatory and short sighted decision against a large share of seven audience .. Seven skews older .. So what. The inspector morse network, bh&g (which someone observed yesterday rates high overall but not in demos). Apart it being made in house by seven any chance of a ten pick up (ala a country practice). Ten would kill for those numbers

  10. Well its taken a lot less reactions to revive a series. It wasnt my cup of tea but seems is one for many others, so why would Seven axe it? They would be very wise to change their minds or even better Channel Ten can pick it up???!!! Then we can be guaranteed its ratings will drop.
