Why is “ABC1” still in the ratings after it was re-branded?

It will take 6 - 8 weeks before "ABC1" disappears from OzTAM data

abcSome readers have been asking why “ABC1” is still counted in the ratings results when it was re-branded as “ABC” a week ago.

OzTAM told TV Tonight a it can take six-to-eight weeks for such changes to take effect, with more than a dozen independent third-party software suppliers updating their systems.

“The ABC appreciates their request to change from ABC1 to ABC came at short notice and will take a few weeks to implementm” a sopkesperson said.

“The name change does not affect OzTAM’s viewing estimates for the channel.”

  1. After the transfer of analogue broadcast signals to digital, the original VHF channel allocation of 2 for ABC was no longer required, due to the implementation of multichanneling. To put it simply, ABC1 is now ABC which used to be ABC2, however, is not the same as the current ABC2, which also contains ABC4 channel space.

  2. Sounds like a bunk reason to me. If they can keep calling it “ABC1” in their released data while presumably some third-party systems have been updated and some not, then they can easily call it “ABC” or “banana sandwich”.

It’s just as easy for OzTAM to have their overall system / spreadsheet / back of an envelope collate data for ABC1 + ABC -> “ABC” as it is to collate ABC1 + ABC -> “ABC1”.

Frankly, I hope that they just forget to change it as it makes it easier to differentiate between the channel and the network.

  3. Some one better tell ABC that the channel is not called ABC1 anymore. From Facebook yesterday:

“On this episode of Grand Designs Kevin meets a master craftsman whose dream is to build a castle made entirely of mud.

    “Tonight from 7.40pm on ABC1”
