Ratings: Is this the next writing on the wall for the television landscape?

2013-10-30_0007Is this the next writing on the wall for the television landscape?

Neither Seven nor Nine could crack the magic million for their news bulletins on a Wednesday night.

Seven News (984,000 / 949,000) defeated its rival (948,000 / 925,000) -it was the second time this week under the million for Nine, following another last week.

Just one show, The Block, managed to rise above the million mark at 1.32m viewers.

While Nine won in primary shares, Seven’s multichannels got them over the line again.

Seven network share was 31.7% then Nine 30.2%, ABC 16.7%, TEN 16.5% and SBS 4.9%.

The Force (988,000) was best for Seven. Border Security was 923,000, Home and Away was 841,000, Criminal Minds was 779,000 / 582,000 and Million Dollar Minute was 499,000. Motive was 211,000.

Nine’s other titles were A Current Affair (816,000), Big Brother (688,000), Hot Seat (536,000) and Big Bang (320,000 / 237,000).

ABC News (762,000) was best for ABC then 7:30 (672,000), Mad as Hell (623,000), Changing Minds (503,000), QI (384,000) and Timothy (327,000).

The Project was 591,000 / 467,000 at TEN. Next were TEN Eyewitness News (560,000) and Wonderland (443,000). The Good Wife returned to 297,000 but The Millers sank to 272,000 / 233,000 and won’t last long on those numbers.

Wildest Islands (229,000) was best for SBS ONE then the final Living with the Enemy (168,000), Salamander (119,000) and SBS World News (107,000).

7TWO’s A Touch of Frost (328,000) topped multichannels.

Sunrise: 361,000
Today: 280,000
ABC News Breakfast: 65,000 / 54,000

  1. Doesn’t this happen every year when daylight saving kicks in? That is, 6pm editions begin to drop as it gets lighter and the ABC’s 7pm news begins to rise.

  2. No wonder the news is starting to dwindle do you realize how much news channel 9 air in a day. (5.00am – 5.30) (11.00am – 12.00 noon) (3.00pm – 4.15pm) (4.15pm – 5.30pm) (6.00pm – 7pm) and that is beside updates during the day and news every half hour on the today programme which is on for three hours. There would be close on six hours per day solely on news on channel 9.

  3. Disappointing figures for The Good Wife – agree with everyone else it deserves more!

Was soo cheesy the way Ten promoted Wonderland’s second batch of eps as the “next chapter”.

I haven’t watched the news in a few months now instead watching Family Feud and the first 30mins of the Project

  4. Maybe if the Commercial TV news stopped treating us like slightly retarded 10 yr olds more people may watch.
God knows why I subject myself to 10 news but thank god only about a quarter of it but Gossage comes on and ruins that.
I use the computer to get all the News I need, as for TV shows what can you say SBS & ABC used to have very good Brit shows on till those grubby bastards at pay got hold of BBC.

  5. i think its more a case that people are outside now with daylight savings… who wants to watch news at 6pm when we can be still outside doing things… especially now that news updates are so readily availble either earlier in the day or via the web…

  6. It must be years (or even decades) since we watched 7, 9 or 10 news. They all became populist jokes.
We do watch both SBS and the ABC news, but I must say that lately I’m all “newsed out”.
What with Ebola, burqas, ISIS, and so-called “Australians” who seem to hate us all, I’m not sleeping well and am considering giving up the news completely!

  7. Padding the “News” out to an hour and the constant teasing by the weather blonde about telling us what the weather will be numerous times during the “news” ticks me right off. And with the need to fill that hour, the definition of “News” is now open to interpretation.

  8. Wonderland season 2 starts up next Wednesday night and some have said it is better than season 1 – it had better be, or it will be a long 22 weeks for Ten.

As others have said, The Millers won;t be on next Wednesday on those numbers – belongs on Eleven.

  9. I prefer nine news to seven news, but neither is a must watch. Daylight savings was always going to take away ratings. Why watch TV when you can be having a beer next to the BBQ.

  10. Agree with @davidp – definitely think mny people are loving the day light savings – we are (then again I don’t watch 7 or 9 news. I usually watch ABC24 on my phone in the morning whislt getting ready for work!
@TasTVcameraman – agree with you re: Wonderland (that was the final of season one last night) and I am enjoying the chemistry between Tom and Miranda but am hoping they hook up soon otherwise it will become fustrating if nothing happens soon…

  11. Those 6pm figures are pretty concerning.

Hopefully this prompts the commercial networks to revisit their late bulletins. It would be very cheap to produce (just lift the stories from the various state bulletins), and at 9:30pm could provide a bit more of a springboard into the later night content which most people don’t even realise is on because they switch off after their 8:30 drama is over.

  12. Have given up on 7 & 9 Sydney “news”. Monday night 9 Sydney had a “story” that was nothing more than a long promotion for Target and some new fashion style they’re introducing – followed in the next commercial break coincidentally by an ad for – Target. Thanks to ABC24 I can get all the news I need to know at any time. Not locked into the 6-7pm mindset anymore.
And Lateline last night was a not-to-be-missed moment.

  13. I could not believe it when I saw TEN advertise The Millers being back – and I couldn’t wait to see the ratings today to see how much it bombed. This show is beyond terrible and TEN should have expected this failure. If it has to be aired, then it should be on Eleven sitting against the equally bad ‘Friends with Better Lives’.

  14. 20 years ago that was unheard of. First there was TV. Then the remote. Now it’s multi channels, pay TV,Facebook, Twitter, ipads, smart phones, IPTV, HBBTV, video streaming, Fetch TV,Youtube etc etc all competing for eye balls. No wonder revenue for free TV is down.

  15. I think seasonal factor do play a part, but I love to see the state by state break down as it could be down to the fact that people in Adelaide and Perth whom have Foxtel with the bulk of customers being on satellite in those two states that don’t gave the commerical freeview coming through whether there sick and tired of changing between devices all of the time when there is Sky News and Fox Sports News respectively.

  16. Davidp I was thinking the same thing. Without really realising, everything I’ve been doing this week has been about half hour later than last week – so cooking dinner when I’d usually be eating and watching tv – I’m sure I’m not the only one!!

  17. The Good Wife is such a great show I really do not understand why it gets such low numbers. Wonderland is getting better all the time, again not reflected in numbers.
