iview to launch Arts-only channel

2014-11-26_0140Arts-lovers are in for more Arts content from public broadcasters.

ABC Director of Television Richard Finlayson said recently, “We are planning to launch an iview-only Arts channel. This will be the first of what will probably be a number of IP channels on the iview service.

“This will be a specialist channel aimed at Arts audiences with a curated collection of the best of the ABC’s Arts content.

“It’s an experiment really, but it may well herald a number of other channes to come.

“So we’ll see how it goes.”

This week SBS-owned STUDIO channel announced it would continue to offer Arts via block programming on SBS ONE and its SBS On Demand platform next year after it exits the Foxtel platform.

J Bar, tomothyd, and anybody else – it’s part of the ABC charter to promote the arts and this a nice and cheap way of doing it. Did you miss the bit about it being an experiment?

Calling it elitist says more about your perspective than it does the people from all walks of life who enjoy something more than just Rage.

  2. @ tomothyd It’s an experiment. IP channels may well be the future of TV. They have a lot of arts content in their archives so it’s a cheap, easy way to test the concept. If it works, it will be expanded.

  3. Why are they throwing money at limited appeal content? I’d rather quality news in its current format than this or the Bondi Hipsters and Josh Thomas on ABC2.
