Binge is the new black amongst US viewers

Half of adult American viewers now identify as binge-viewers, according to a new survey.

TV-RemoteHalf of adult American viewers now identify as binge-viewers, according to a new study of 1,000 adults with pay TV subscriptions.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers survey found more than half of survey respondents admitted they binged more frequently in 2014 than they did last year, and 60 percent said they string three or more episodes together at least once a month. Amongst younger viewers the results were even higher.

Sixty-one percent of those surveyed agreed with the statement, “there are too many shows to watch, and not enough time to watch them.”

“They are binge-viewing just to keep up,” Matt Lieberman, director of PwC’s entertainment, media and communications practice, told The Huffington Post.

Encouragingly, viewers were willing to pay extra to access as many shows as possible, not just sticking to one platform.

“We heard stories of consumers filling up their DVRs with their favourite series and also starting/stopping online subscription services just to get to their favourite content,” Lieberman said.

But there was also a 6 percent drop in cable subscriptions in 2014 for those under the age of 35 while only 42 percent expected to have cable TV service in 10 years time.

  1. Lol – not only Americans. Last night I watched season 3 and 4 (only 4 eps per season, I must admit) of Mad Dogs. My excuse is that I cannot remember what happened in last week’s episode, so I need to ‘binge’.

  2. What was the term about making shows?
“The shows aren’t there for our enjoyment, they are there to get us to watch the advertisements”?
Yeah – I think that line is becoming obsolete.

  3. Not surprising. The normal TV model just doesn’t work anymore, as Craig said, people want to watch shows when they want to. They also want shows ASAP from the US, but networks are still making us wait weeks and in many cases months after they’ve aired over there.

  4. I do this often, bank up shows on the PVR and watch them weeks later, or get the DVDs and do the same.

Network TV programs as we know them are dying, outside of live events people want to watch the shows they like when they want not when the networks say we must watch them.

Foxtel has the right idea with many top show shown many times of the week, plus the potion to easily record the series and know its going to be sitting there on your PVR when you want them.
