Social media anger over Big Bash delays

A one hour delay in Queensland upsets sports fans, but there is some good news.

2014-12-20_1811Cricket fans in Queensland, including some Brisbane-based Australian cricketers, have taken to social media to vent about delays to TEN’s Big Bash League.

Matches on Thursday and Friday were delayed by a one hour start following The Project.

Some readers on TV Tonight have also complained about the delays.

Despite the claim the big bash league was live, it was a delayed broadcast into Brisbane.
I accidentally saw the final results on the net whilst watching the game, it took away any further interest for me, very disappointing!

Seriously unimpressed that Ten aren’t screening any Big Bash games live in Brisbane. Last year they were all live and The Project screened after the game. Please Ten, show the games live, or move them to One for the first hour.

So it looks like Ten won’t be showing the Big Bash live into Qld on Thurs night. At least Nine can always show cricket live.

The Courier Mail also took up the cause for local sport fans:

Having any games delayed into Queensland is still an ordinary result for this state of renowned sports lovers.

It is understood about 15 of the 35 Big Bash games will be shown on delay in Queensland.

A TEN spokesperson said early start times by the BBL were to blame.

“It is live in Queensland for the next two weeks. After that, some live, some delayed,” he told TV Tonight.

“We will be airing 34 KFC T20 Big Bash League matches in prime time. Unfortunately, due to the earlier start times of Big Bash matches this year, there will be some matches that will be delayed in Brisbane and Adelaide.

“The majority of matches will be live in every market on TEN, with all matches available live in Perth on ONE and then replayed on TEN in Perth at 8.30pm.”

The Project‘s 2014 season has now ended which meant Live coverage began last night. Coverage in Queensland is from 6pm.

  1. QLD is backward for not taking daylight saving. It should be mandatory to have D/L saving so as not to annoy the rest of the country.
Guess what QLD… Channel 9 will delay your first month of NRL too! So keep your complaint pens fresh

  2. Delayed in Darwin as well, lazy programming with 10 not wanting to fill after the games in markets that don’t match Sydney or Melbourne , apparently the rest of the country doesn’t matter!

  3. Ridiculous how Ten PR spun their response. They could easily show it live into Brisbane. Why not do a 5 minute highlight reel of the first hour of play, then cross to the live coverage? Using One to its advantage is the ultimate solution, but at least meet the viewers half way with something…

  4. Lol Blaming day light saving for the delayed Broadcast . Maybe us Qlders should just be greatful we get the Telecast in Colour.

it’s pretty simple what Queensland Cricket Lovers need to do is to not watch the Delayed Broadcasts. Hit ch 10 where it hurts them the most, the Hip pocket (Tv Ratings) Qlders have no one else to blame if we keep watching ch 10 pathetic delayed coverage!!!!

  5. Why doesn’t Queensland finally get on board with daylight savings. It would make sense to get in line with the rest of the country which would be economically beneficially and we wouldn’t be talking about delayed cricket or any other delayed sport coverage for that matter.

  6. I would have thought that Qld should have seen the light by now and gone to daylight saving like the other progressive states on the eastern seaboard, and then there would be no problem

  7. I can understand the importance of keeping the early evening lineup of Ten News, Family Feud and The Project on the main channel intact, but the Cricket should be played live on One for the first hour and then switch to Ten at 7.30pm.

  8. And this was the case for Perth viewers when they had to see this coverage at 8:30PM As a replay. I felt so angry about Perth viewers seeing this as a replay. Last year, TEN Perth managed to put this BBL live after the news even though it was 1/2 the coverage.

  9. In Perth last year they would run the first 90 mins on One and then continue the broadcast on Ten once the 5PM news was finished. This seems like an obvious solution for Qld.

However they have moved away from that strategy this year and broadcast the whole game on One, another obvious possible solution for Qld.

I think eventually in Perth they will only show it in One and not have the encore on Ten. The encore maybe useful for fans who are at work at 4:30 but I just don’t see it getting the viewership to sustain the encore in prime time. The only time I would of watched the encore last year if it were available was the night of that special Craig Simmons century, but something like that only comes around once is a good long while.

Of course the real downside to the BBL airing live on One in Perth is that it means there is only two channels I can watch Family Feud- what a…

  10. I would have thought that Ten could ill afford to p!ss off what little audience they have left. Nobody is watching One so why not put the BBL on there for the first hour? Live sport in HD? Oh noes!

  11. Totally ridiculous that one cannot be used .. But same today with W league final .. Live nsw, act, Vic, tas and because perth is playing wa but delayed queensland and South Australia .. Do not understand it

  12. With 5 channels, 1, 10, 11, 14, and 15, they can’t show it live in some states? Give me strength! This is 2014, not 1956!
All FTA sports contracts should carry mandatory ‘live’ clauses in them if they don’t already.

  13. It has absolutely nothing to do with early start times. It is all about ensuring The Project screens in its usual time slot after it suffered poor ratings last year when it was shown after the BBL in some markets. When you have three channels to show cricket on, it is inexcusable to delay the telecast. On Friday Ten squawked about BBL being the most talked about program on social media. They neglected to say it was the most talked about show because so many people were complaining about the delayed telecast. Ten’s lack of response to questions as to why it was delayed was very telling.

  14. Is this the first year The Project hasn’t aired at all over the Christmas/New Year period? I recall in previous years they had a summer highlights series.

  15. In Brisbane and more likely to watch if live. Who cares if it starts early most people are on holidays and easier for kids to watch. Friday night game finished at 11pm.

  16. This needs to go back to Fox Sports quick smart. HD and Live everywhere. The way it should be shown.

I watched most of the games in the first 2 seasons but only watch the Sixers games now it is on ten.
