23 million watch Saturday Night Live turn 40

SNL40 rewrites the record books for NBC.

A whopping 23 million US viewers watched the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special on NBC, the network’s most watched entertainment broadcast in 10 years, outside of Super Bowl.

It nudged the last record of 23.9m viewers in 2004 with ER on the night of the Frasier finale.

The show also spawned 1.3 million tweets sent by 449,000 people and seen by 9.1 million people during the show and for the three hours before and after. While that didn’t top events like Super Bowl, Nielsen declared it a record for episodic television.

The special, which extended for over three hours, attracted a cavalcade of stars including Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Andy Samberg, Melissa McCarthy, Bill Hader, Chris Rock, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Billy Crystal, Jane Curtin, Molly Shannon, Justin Timberlake, Emma Stone, Ed Norton, James Franco, Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Bradley Cooper, Kerry Washington, Betty White, Jerry Seinfeld, Michael Douglas, Peyton Manning, Jim Carrey, Robert De Niro, John Goodman, as well as show first timers Jack Nicholson, Dakota Johnson and surprise guest Sarah Palin.

The Comedy Channel will air this in Australia at 7:30pm Saturday February 28th.

  1. Funniest moment of the show for me was Jerry Seinfeld’s joke about Brian Williams being an original cast member and his banter with Larry David. Also Kanye West’s musical performance was awesome.
