Rugby union competition, the Shute Shield, will air Live on 7TWO this year, from tomorrow with the season opener between Eastern Suburbs and Gordon.

“This is exciting news for the game in New South Wales as the Intrust Super Shute Shield is the entry point and the foundation of first class rugby in Australia,” said Bruce Worboys, executive director of NSW Rugby. “Club Rugby TV, through John Murray and Nick Fordham, has worked unfailingly hard over several months to bring this to fruition.”

Saul Shtein, Seven’s Head of Sport, said: “We are delighted to become a partner with the Intrust Super Shute Shield. We are dramatically expanding our leadership in sports and we look forward to building the presence and awareness of the Shield. It is a competition with a rich and deep heritage and we can’t wait for a great season of rugby.”

It is expected to air at 3pm Saturday 7TWO, check local guides.

    1. I’m aware of that. This season the 7 Network has VFL/SANFL/WAFL and Shute Shield.
All of them are only shown into the relevant state and posted later on 7’s online site. I’d rather the old ABC system of screening a replay. They do have 3 channels after all, what’s wrong with 10.30pm Sat-Tues night each week?

  1. @ Gonzo Seven sees some value in it by buying rights to this just like they did with the state footy leagues. Seven only have to broadcast 1 match per week simple and cheap. Hopefully it will grow. I would like to see the ARC on 7mate in the future or better yet Rugby7s with is better and faster than the 15 aside game which is boring and littered with technicalities that only geniuses can understand. Remember David Leckie who was head of 7 before Tim Warner took over didn’t want Rugby because of the confusing rules which stiffeled enjoyment and the viewing experience.

  2. Cheap and cheerful way to build some infrastructure around live rugby with the view of maybe one day picking up the Rugby Championship or god forbid, Super Rugby..? Hope so, but doubt it.

    Good stuff Seven!

    1. Rugby Championship belongs to Ten and Fox Sports for another six years. Super Rugby is on Network Ten by showing 1 match on replay starting 2016. Seven didn’t even want Rugby Union anyway. ARU is probably paying Seven to broadcast the Shute Shield otherwise they probably wouldn’t have picked it up

  3. Is this only on in NSW?
Just checked my EPG here in Hobart and there’s no mention of it.
I would have thought in this age of multichannels (and shortage of content) that Networks would want to show Shute Shield/SANFL/WAFL/VFL etc nationwide at the least as a replay.
Used to enjoy watching all of these I mentioned above on ABC as replays, bit disappointed that they aren’t being offered elsewhere (outside of on line).

  4. Great news! Good to see NSW viewers aren’t stuck with AFL as the only football code on free-to-air on Saturdays. I was worried this comp was lost to Pay TV. Good to see Seven supporting local rugby.

  5. It’s good to see this comp being shown, even if it’s on a digital channel. I hope they do a good job covering the game. It will take some time getting used to it not being on the abc though
