“We’re actively assessing how this breach occurred," says HBO. But torrents are heading towards one million downloads.

HBO has issued a brief statement following the leak of four episodes of Game of Thrones, understood to be from a review copy with a blurred watermark.

“Sadly, it seems the leaked four episodes of the upcoming season of Game of Thrones originated from within a group approved by HBO to receive them,” HBO said.

“We’re actively assessing how this breach occurred.”

According to Torrent Freak, the episodes were downloaded more than 100,000 within the first 3 hours.

That number is expected to increase to more than a million.

Select disks are sent to Australian media approved by HBO through Foxtel, but the simulcast was set for 170 countries.

Meanwhile Mumbrella reports Twitter will look into suspending accounts found to be broadcasting copyrighted material on its new live-streaming service Periscope. Dozens of live streams of the show were made available on the app from across the world.

“Any violation of the terms of use are taken seriously,” the spokesperson said. “We work together with our community to ensure our content rules are respected. Report any content that violates our Community Guidelines.”

Last night Foxtel hosted a screening at the Sydney Opera House.
