Parliamentary Secretary Alan Tudge has cancelled his appearance in tonight’s edition of Q & A, following week-long criticism of the show.
On Friday his appearance was confirmed by ABC, noting he is one of Tony Abbott’s “right hand men,” but media reports indicate he is now a no-show.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate I attend while a formal government review of last week’s program is in progress,” Tudge wrote in an opinion piece for today’s Australian.
He has not ruled out future appearances.
ABC is yet to confirm his replacement.
Update: News Corp reports Menzies Research Centre executive director Nick Cater has also pulled out of tonight’s program.
Malcolm Turnbull says he was invited to appear but politely declined.

This is excellent news! The less I have to see and hear of LNP ministers, the better, really.
So the LNP don’t go on Q & A….then they dont get to put there point across in the discussion….whatever it is about….seems a tad childish to me?!?….What did they say about adults now running the country….Where?
I would like to Quote, from George Orwell’s “1984”, ” Oceania, ruled by a party who has total control over all its citizens. Winston Smith is one of the bureaucrats, rewriting history in one of the departments. One day he commits the crime of falling in love with Julia. They try to escape Big Brother’s listening and viewing devices, but, of course, nobody can really escape” Written by Mattias Thuresson
I think it is absolutely disgusting that the government can call for a review of a TV that they dont like. We live in a democratic country. Just cause Abbott doesn’t like something that is broadcast on a Live TV show he wants to cancel the show.
What happened to having a bit of separation between the media and the government.
Left Wing…. Right Wing….. Who cares….. We dont live in China where the Government try to control everything…. Although with the new internet piracy laws maybe that is the way we are headed.
Please don’t blame Q&A as a lefty show and lack of balance anymore if those OOT LNP people refused or declined the invitation to be on the panel. #IstandwithABC
Huh? Nick Cater wasn’t even in the schedule for Q&A tonight. Methinks someone is trying to get himself some attention.
He was.
Okay, he wasn’t listed last Thursday when I checked, then he wasn’t listed this morning either. Fastest yes/no guest turnaround for Q&A.
Not sure where you have been reading. He has been listed in original post on this site, published on Friday.
The guest list on the Q&A website.
Nick Cater was added on Thursday (you can see Q&A tweet to confirm). It may not have been added to their website immediately. In my post on Friday I listed him and he was confirmed as a cancellation today.
“Physicist Lawrence Krauss….Tim Wilson….Parliamentary Secretary Alan Tudge….Dr Anne Al. They’ll join….Tanya Plibersek and Nick Cater”. Should get John Howard back on. Malcolm Turnbull bailed.
Interesting exchange on Insiders yesterday when they replayed David Hicks interview to John Howard on Q&A. Howard noted how great it was in a democracy as ours that such open discussion could take place. See original video here.
Early election! Wouldn’t want to answer any questions that may make them poll lower
This is only the start of the fallout. Tony Jones in my opinion needs to be called into question regarding last weeks show.
The host immediately ruled the comment out of order and apologised. He does not book the guests.
So you think Jones has no input in the choice of guests? Really?
Tony Jones would have more input into the panel mix than giving approval for every audience member and question. In any case neither are his responsibility.
“So you think Jones has no input in the choice of guests?” The person who created all of the kerfuffle was not a guest, or panel member. He was in the studio audience. Nick Cater is mentioned on the original item on this site, from where I copied guest list earlier today. I guess it took Tony a weekend to get up to speed, being in Singapore and all, before instructing Cater to bail.
So is this govt review just a way for the PM to get rid of a show that he is too chicken to appear on?
Malcolm was asked to appear tonight but refused, having said yesterday that he would continue to appear.
Yesterday he also claimed Arky Mallah was likely to have blown up the ABC last Monday night. He’s not going to want to take questions on that.
“Mr Humphries….this gentleman is looking for a yellow tie.”
Just one more backflip by a govt that is making a lot of noise about this to deflect attention away from how poorly they’re doing in governing for the majority. It’s obvious that the terrorism card is going to be pretty worn by the time of the next election from having being played so often by Abbot whenever he needs to say “Look over here; look…over…here”.
Again I say Yep….my thoughts also…..
I don’t suppose too many people outside the media and tv junkies will give a hoot about him not appearing, but i think it’s dim and petty at this point. The more the government bleats, the more this is beaten up into some shape that no-one can recognize. Especially as Turnbull said yesterday he would still appear when invited. The coalition need consistency, if they are going to make a federal case out of this. Pardon the pun.
