Next month ABC premieres The Politician’s Husband, which screened last year on Pay TV.
The 3 part drama features David Tennant and Emily Watson as a couple dealing with the shifting balance of power in a political marriage, as she becomes more successful than he.
Written by Paula Milne and directed by Simon Cellan-Jones, this is a companion piece to The Politician’s Wife (1995) starring Trevor Eve and Juliet Stevenson.
Aiden Hoynes (David Tennant), a senior Cabinet Minister, is happily married to Freya (Emily Watson), a junior minister who has consistently put her career ambitions on hold for the sake of Aiden’s career and their family. When Aiden’s career path into the top echelons comes to an abrupt halt, the power balance within the marriage is irrevocably shifted as he witnesses his wife’s political career soar.
Desperate to salvage his political career and cling to power at whatever cost, Aiden risks destroying everything he holds most dear.
In episode one, Aiden Hoynes and Freya Gardner are the golden couple of British politics. Aiden resigns from cabinet in a failed leadership bid thwarted by his best friend Bruce Babbish (Ed Stoppard).
In the cabinet reshuffle Freya is appointed to cabinet, while Aiden returns to the back benches and a life of political obscurity. Finally out of her husband’s shadow, Freya is forced to choose between her own career ambitions and publicly supporting her husband.
