Double dose of drama for Canberra

With Secret City & The Code both filming in Canberra, ACT has run low on skilled crew.

Well this is a first: two dramas filming in Canberra at the same time has struck a problem -not enough skilled crew to go around.

Foxtel’s Secret City, produced by Matchbox Pictures, and ABC’s second season of The Code, by Playmaker Media, have been filming around Lake Burley Griffin.

“It shows how nascent the industry here is,” Screen ACT director Monica Penders told Fairfax.

“We’ve been strong on factual productions, such as documentaries, but when it comes to high-end drama we’re only just getting our feet wet.

But she also remained pragmatic, describing it as a “first world problem” and said the production money into the territory would drive the growth of the talent pool in the local sector.

Good to see more drama filmed beyond Sydney & Melbourne.

Both series are set to air in 2016.

  1. I tried reading Marmalade Files, the book Secret City is based on, last year but gave up because the writing style made me feel like I was reading a newspaper article. Might give it another shot before this show goes to air though.

On another note, hopefully the second season of The Code is better than the first. I’m not sure if it was because it was overhyped, but I just couldn’t get that into the first.
