Viewers timeshifting and streaming as early as 6:30pm

TV industry believes viewers watch Live until 9pm then turn to alternatives -but viewers have another message for them.

The TV industry is of the belief that most viewers are turning to Streaming at 9pm, but according to early data in the TV Tonight Audience Inventory, there are big numbers switching off Live TV earlier.

Much earlier…

30% of current respondents indicate they are dipping into ‘non-Live’ viewing -Timeshifted, Catch-Up and Streaming- at 6:30pm or earlier.

Another 27% have indicated they turn to alternative viewing at 7:30pm, and 16% at 8:30pm.

There are also big results that indicate ‘non-live’ content comprises around 75% of their total viewing.

These are just two of the questions in this year’s survey on the way we consume television, and the issues that concern you.

So far there are over 600 completed surveys.

If you haven’t filled one out yet, all the information you need can be found here.

Survey closes August 29.

  1. To make it really simple for them: We only watch Home & Away “live” every night. Everything else is recorded and watched (often in Fast Forward) at the time we want, mainly because we can skip all the filler and adds and only watch the stuff that is interesting. For example; “Dancing With The Stars” we only watch Matt Mitchum and skip all the rest … 🙁

  2. The TV industry has a fair number of slow on the uptake execs, combined with naivity and arrogance, they will always be the last to realise what is happening. When the NBN finally gets everywhere, they will face the consequences of treating the viewers with contempt on so many occasions over so many decades. Streaming could destroy the current model

  3. Just regarding home and away. When I used to watch it often watched it live or a bit later in the evening. I often found that watched live tv before or after in prime time if something caught my attention. Now hardly watch live tv in prime time as don’t have a reason to turn the tv on at 7pm. So if networks think drama/ soaps are not a reason to turn the tv on in early evening then that’s just wrong.

  4. If your interested in drama and many dramas air later in the night on free to air then are u going to do as a viewer? Spend the night watching 1hr news & 2hr reality in prime time that you have no interest in or use that time to catch up on drama? I know what I’ll be doing. Then will turn the tv off use the net, listen to a podcast, read or something else. If I’m not getting what I want from free to air I know where the off button is.
