Netflix negotiating Gilmore Girls revival

Much-loved drama which ran for seven seasons could be back in the form of telemovies.

According to multiple sources, Netflix is looking to revive Gilmore Girls.

The streaming service is said to be considering four 90-minute telemovies after replays have proven to be a strong performer for them.

The show initially ran for seven seasons and 153 episodes, six seasons under creator Amy Sherman-Palladino who exited following a contract dispute with the studio. But a Netflix revival would be her opportunity to add a final coda to her characters.

Earlier this year at a sell-out cast reunion she noted, “It’s always a bummer when you don’t get to end it. I had hoped maybe that there would have been a call, ‘Hey, it’s the last episode, do you want to come back?’ And there wasn’t. But that’s OK, that’s not the way it works in Hollywood where there are rules.”

  1. Sherman Palladino was sacked at the end of S6 because she wouldn’t except cost cutting. They brought in someone from outside who turned it into a soap about Lorelai and Luke, and ended up costing as much per episode anyway, so the show was cancelled.

10 years later you can’t go back and do the orginal ending. It can no longer be a show about a girls journey through an Ivy League school and college. It will be a new show using the two lead characters to cash in on the fan base.

    1. The show was canceled because the 2 lead ladies couldn’t come to an agreement with the studio over pay and number of episodes, they wanted a shorter seasons. Many of the other cast members had already signed on for a new season.

  2. I think its probably too early for a reunion or reboot. Although it does seem to be the flavor of the year. If i was to choose which show i would bring back even for a Telemovie it would be Charmed. enjoyed it a lot. Even though they wrapped it up well i still think they could have done something more. Maybe pick it up with the next Gen.

  3. I agree, S7 is not my favorite and it deserved a much better ending for some of the key characters. Ed will be missed and I really hope they address his passing in some way. Also hope Melissa can be part of it, the show would not be the same without her, plus she would undoubtedly boost the rating with her new fans.

I really hope they do something to bridge the 8 year cap, set it in the present but maybe we mini flashbacks or something.

I hope this works out but even as much of a fan I am I don’t think we need a full time return of the show, maybe a series of TV movies after the 4 they have planned?

  4. As much as I love this show. I don’t think I could watch a new series in any format. I didn’t like season 7 at all, but I feel like what can you do with the characters?

  5. Oh I need this to happen! I loved this show and was always a little bitter at how it ended. The cast all seemed pretty keen at the reunion so fingers crossed. It’s just a shame that Edward Herrmann is no longer with us, his absence will definitely be felt in any reunion.

    1. I have to agree it wasn’t a great ending. The show deserved better than that. I also agree that its sad Edward Herrmann won’t be there.

I’m mostly wondering about Sookie’s character. Melissa McCarlthy wasn’t at the reunion and her absence wasn’t really discussed either. With her big Hollywood career could they afford her anyway.

    2. I’m another person who was disappointed with the final episode of Gilmore Girls. After teasing us with Lorelai and Luke’s potential relationship for 7 seasons, those final few minutes felt rushed–and I felt cheated.

I realise it was done that way because the show had been cancelled and the writers wanted to give the viewers their happy ending. But still, it was a poor ending for such a wonderful show. I hope these telemovies will finally provide the fulfilment the viewers needed.

      1. Actually they didn’t find out the fate of the show until weeks after it had been filmed and after the season wrap party which some cast could not attend because of other work.

I agree with Luke and Lorelai, having just re-watched the final season in the last few weeks. After Lorelai’s disastrous marriage the final few eps of Luke and Lorelai trying to reconnect was rushed. It was somewhat made up for with their kiss right at the end and a hint that they would be together. Really hope they don’t screw things up and bring Chris back.

As for Rory, being younger she is an open book. Maybe one of he past guys comes back or maybe they will cast a new guy, please no ‘stunt’ casting by getting someone famous just to get viewers.

Its a tricky thing bringing back any show with such a strong and loyal fan base, hope they don’t screw it up!

        1. The interesting thing I have noted is how well-made and resourced this show was surviving even the turbulent period from the dot com crash through 9/11 into the GFC.

Just think of the sets for example – there must have been at least 8 sets or locations (Gilmour house, parents house, Lukes diner and apartment, 2 different inns/hotel lobbys plus kitchens, the town hall, at least 2 other shops in Stars Hollow, Chiltern school and then Yale University, Sookies house plus all the exterior shots of Stars Hollow spread out between Ontario and Los Angeles. Think of the guest stars, extras, lighting, sound, transporation and wardrobe! It must have been a massive undertaking – and to think they had to pump out 22 eps per year! There is no way we see that sort of commitment to scripted TV now.
