Tomorrow morning from 5.00am Nine will begin simulcasting in high definition (HD) on 9HD, located on Channel 90. If you don’t have HD it will still be simulcast on Ch 91 in standard definition.
90 – 9HD
91 – Channel 9
92 – 9Gem
93 – 9Go!
94 – 9Life
95 – Extra
Nine has supplied further information for viewers:
HD gives you exceptionally clear, crisp pictures with vivid colours and double the resolution of standard definition.
All of Australia’s most loved Channel Nine programs and sporting events, including the Third Test between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide (starting November 27), will be broadcast in crystal-clear high definition.
To view 9HD you will need to retune your television. It’s simple and easy. Just go to your TV Menu
settings. Select Setup and click on the Auto Tuning Option.
How to re-tune your television:
· Menu or Home button on remote control
· Press OK
· Settings or Setup
· Press OK
· Digital Setup
· Press OK
· Auto scan or Auto retune will appear
· Press OK
· It will take few minutes to do the re-scan. This will search for the channel and restore it in your Digital TV or receiver
· Press Exit
After you re-tune your TV you will have Channel 90 available if you have a HD-enabled TV. If you don’t receive Channel 90 after you re-tune then you don’t have an Mpeg 4 decoder and will not be able to receive 9HD. Viewers without an HD-enabled television will still be able to watch Channel Nine in standard definition on Channel 9/91.
For viewers with any questions regarding the re-tune, the Nine Network has set up the following contacts for further assistance:
· Phone: Contact the 9HD Helpline number 1800 173 055
· Online: 9jumpin.com.au
· Email: Please email the Channel 9 Viewer Services team: [email protected]

To all the city folk were still getting skippy on GEMHD. yay. I guess we should be happy with that
Just tuned my LG TV and ch90 is coming up as Audio Only, yes it is a HD tuner and all the other HD channels are working fine, as are the new channels numbers. I think it’s the TV as my Austar box is picking up ch90 just mine, yet to test other TVs and PVRs in the house.
One of my TVs did that with the Racing channel and I had to change a setting to tell it to search for MPEG-4 channels
Same for my LG. same thing happened with GEM a long time ago and LG had to apply an update via USB. Panasonic BluRay also not picking up 90
It’s been on since at least 3am.
Don’t believe everything you read about 5am.
The new HD channel should have gone to 9 and not 90, as its too hard to get to with remotes, versus the other FTA mainstream channels
I agree! It’s such a pain.
WIN told me they have nothing to advise. So no changes as yet.
Hi David, I called them locally as well. They told me no plans at present to convert Win to HD nor add Nine Life. Contact was unsure about GEM changing to SD. I asked why they deleted WIN off Gem logo and contact was unsure.
FYI Go via WIN has the 9 dot logo now as a watermark and GEM has adverts with the 9 dots but watermark is still the old one. I did a re-brand and my tv still has Gem as being broadcasted in HD.
Here in Launceston I was told “sometime next year”… 🙁
I can’t see racing.com, does that mean I need to buy a new TV? Feels like I just got it.
No, it just means you don’t have to put up with a ‘clutter channel’ as you scroll through whats on. I run the channels though Favorites, and all the datacasts are not included on purpose.
I cant see 9HD which is what i was wanting. Bit cut.
Really looking forward to a new revolution of 9HD.
@hidefdave and @kissmad i contacted WIN as well… and easy for me to do cause i once worked there… 9 have been planning this for a long time… and in tonights news they say at least 12 months… my mail is that 9 didnt tell WIN or NBN until 4 weeks ago.. so they are playing catchup… or one could be curious and say that the affiliation is up in 4 weeks and government changes…WIN might be waiting for an outcome to all this before they spend the money…. which i think is fair enough
This indicates Extra 2 is being scrapped – good riddance to it.
Won’t we have to do this again next week for SBS?
9 Darwin and NBN Newcastle are O&O Nine stations. WIN is not owned by Nine. They just relay Nine’s programs. Given the thousand or so transmitters WIN has, and the fact that there has been no mention of anything on WIN, assume (sorry David) WIN’s not doing anything on Thursday.
The good thing WIN did this week was to remove those hideous bright purple WIN/GEM and GO! logos.
Is that 5am AEDST so in QLD will you be able to do the scan at 4am?
What about NBN Television?
The answer to this was posted here this morning. Read down.
Is Go affected? I might not have a chance to rescan before I need to record Survivor on Go at 7.30pm.
GO! will be fine as no changes – both ch 93 and 99. Survivor’s a double this week too I think.
Thank you. I wasn’t worried about it until reading the comments on this topic.
Viewers of Southern Cross in South Australia are also set to miss out on 9hd and 9Life at this stage, pending discussions with Nine.
And i believe a launch date for 9Life in Darwin is to be confirmed but Darwin is to get 9HD as scheduled tomorrow.
They seem to have done a great job promoting the new channel and the change to HD on 9 but completely ignored the impact of the changes to Gem and GO! Half-a**ed as usual at nine….
“Impact of the changes to Gem and GO!”??
Have you not seen the ads for all the channels and their new names?
The channels are changing LCN number its not rocket science.
Instead of typing 99 or 90 on your remote you will type 93 or 92.
Whats half-arsed about it?
Enjoy the last night of GEM in HD!
Interesting to see that the EPGs for ch 94 and 95 continue into tomorrow – even though 94 will be 9Life and 95 will be Xtra, not xtra+2…
I will miss Friends and Gilmore Girls in HD 🙁
“If you don’t receive Channel 90 after you re-tune then you don’t have an Mpeg 4 decoder”
And as someone who volunteers to help the elderly with IT and Media issues, a very large number of sets out there don’t support mpg4, particularly in low/fixed income situations.
If your set is more than about 4 years old, there’s an even chance you can’t receive mpg4 streams. But as has been pointed out, if you can see racing.com you should be ok.
If they cant afford a new TV they can always buy a Digital Set Top Box for less than $50
HD is double the resolution of standard definition? Are these people stupid? HD is Five times SD… unless they’re referring to 720p “HD”, which is such a negligible improvement on today’s high resolution displays that it’s not even worth mentioning (at only slightly more than double the resolution of SD).
Cheap UHD (Ultra High Definition, often falsely referred as “4K”) televisions are flooding the marketplace and there are hardly any HD channels on FTA let alone UHD. It’s a disgrace that “HD” is considered a selling point for FTA in this day and age.
Double the resolution is almost correct if you’re talking about DPI. 1080÷576= approx 2.
However, in terms of total number of pixels, 1080p is just over 2MP, 576p is close to .6MP, so Full HD is closer to 3.5 times the resolution of SD. Don’t be so quick to call people stupid when the same could be said about yourself.
Also, it’s not fair to call 720p a ‘negligible improvement’. Even on a 1080p TV set, each pixel of 720p video would only take up 1.5pixels of the TV in each direction. The difference in quality from SD is readily noticeable. The bitrate would be a bigger decider in the quality than whether the footage is 720p or 1080p.
ESPN is 720p and is substantially clearer than SD
If Win does not switch can we presume GEM will be broadcasted in SD as Nine is switching?
In my experience one can never presume anything of TV!
I guess I’ll find out tomorrow if the tv runs mpeg4.
If you can see the racing.com channel I think you’re good 🙂
Racing.com is mpeg4. If you currently get that, you’ll get 9HD
What about WIN viewers or don’t we matter!
Thank God it’s not us.
So this can only be done at 5am!! how about tuning it on earlier so people can set it up prior the official turn on
Might be tough to tune it before it’s on the air 🙂
Most TV sets will automatically update.
The channels already exist…. 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95
They will just be changing name tomorrow. No need to panic and tune at exactly 5am
Thanks David! I was wondering what time it starts.
I spoke to a guy in engineering at NBN who said they won’t launch tomorrow but it will be “very very soon.”
WIN… no idea, sorry.
I have emailed WIN publicity twice now for a comment on whether or not we can expect WIN to follow suit with the HD/Life channels. On both occasions I was told they’d check it out and get back to me…still waiting…
Maybe cause WIN has many different versions? – the satellite bill would be huge if each one of these had to be carried by HD.
