Nine HD and 9Life will launch to viewers in Northern NSW on Tuesday March 1st.

8 – NBN (In Standard Definition)
80 – 9HD (The new service in High Definition. It is a simulcast of Channel 8)
81 – NBN (In Standard Definition)
82 – 9GEM (In Standard Definition)
83 – 9GO! (In Standard Definition)
84 – 9Life (The New Service in Standard Definition)
85 – eXtra (In Standard Definition)
88 – 9GO! (In Standard Definition)

NBN says it will be using MPEG4 to broadcast the High Definition Service on Channel 80 while all other services will remain as MPEG2.

Newer receivers should automatically add the new services when they start on the 1st of March. If you don’t see at least 9Life on channel 84 then you will need to retune.

If you can’t receive the MPEG 4 High Definition broadcasts you still will be able to watch NBN in Standard Definition as well as the other services (9GEM, 9GO!, 9Life).

If your PVR/DVD recorder or Set Top Box does not show the new 9Life Channel after the 1st of March then you should do a rescan on those devices. Please consult the manual for your device for the correct procedure.

  1. Problem is, Nine have gone down the totally ridiculous path of broadcasting interlaced video, when progressive scanning provides a much superior picture. 576i, 720i, 1080i are all encoded to present better moving pictures on cathode ray tube TV’s, making NBN-TV’s statement
“To allow us to provide a higher quality HD broadcasts as well as include the new 9Life channel we are using a new technology”
absolute garbage! Take a look at Netflix HD, in 1080p, which is crisp and sharp on today’s large format plasma/LCD/LED devices, before claiming that you’ve got ‘new technology’; especially when MPEG4 video has been around for the best part of ten years. Ah well, at least we’re getting it, unlike Southern Cross Ten and Prime TV who have both announced they won’t be upgrading their broadcasts any time soon…

  2. I wonder if Tivo will finally have their EPG for NBN channels sorted out for that? Currently all these channels already exist, with the exception of 90, which is still Gem (as it used to be everywhere) and 94. Yet the Tivo EPG is empty for 81, 82 & 83, even though they are already NBN, Gem and Go.

  3. Hi David!

My Mum in Northern NSW will be happy with this news!

I have two questions – is this logo in your story – the 9HD NBN stacked logo – was that provided by NBN. If so, that gives us an idea that the HD feel may carry some duel branding, in the preparation for the switch from NBN to Channel 9 brands.

And secondly, do we know if there will be 6 localised 9HD feeds for NBN’s 6 local areas or one entire Newcastle/NNSW feed?

  4. Speaking of Ch9, what the hell has happened to Go?? I used to like that channel, but its now basically cartoons. If it doesnt change soon, I’m just going (no pun intended) to turn it off like all the infomercial channels.
