SBS has announced Free to Air rights for the UEFA Euro 2016 comprising 8 Live matches, the Final and a daily highlights show from June.

The announcement follows last week’s news of English Premier League games with Optus, in exchange for FIFA World Cup matches.

SBS Director of Sport, Ken Shipp said: “SBS is pleased to have obtained the exclusive free-to-air rights for the UEFA Euro 2016.

“We’re incredibly passionate and proud about our football heritage. SBS has been in the football business for over 30 years and we believe that football is a sport that truly reflects our unique Charter by connecting Australia’s diverse communities.”

Watch Cristiano Ronaldo, Manuel Neuer, Wayne Rooney, Andres Iniesta, Gareth Bale and Paul Pogba, as they all battle for victory.

The 2016 edition of the European Football championships is the biggest yet, with 24 teams competing across France for the Henri Delauney Trophy. Spain enter the tournament as the two time reigning champions, but will face a huge battle against World Champion Germany, a revitalised England and the host nation themselves.

The coverage for Euro 2016 will see 8 live matches from the knockout stage, including the final on SBS and SBS HD, with a daily highlights show at 5.30pm on SBS 2.

SBS’s coverage of the UEFA Euro 2016 will commence June 11, all on SBS and SBS HD, with daily news and video highlights on sbs.com.au/theworldgame.

  1. Great news about time SBS started to spend its money wisely it calls itself the soccer station but not much soccer on SBS . Just announced one EPL game a week for next season seriously just one at least with the UEFA Euro it has all the important games .even with Foxtel top sports package you still can not watch any soccer other than A league and EPL not from next season any more all the rest Spanish league German league Italian league ,Euro, FAcup are all on that Bein channel which costs some two hundred dollars on top of the top sport Foxtel package . We are so being ripped off in this country when it comes to top sports.

    1. FA Cup is on ESPN and its part of sports package, but you are correct, BEIN sports picture quality looks like they transmit from another TV,terrible,Fox Sports obviously only care about AFL & NRL,.

  2. Only 9 out of a possible 51 matches? None of the quarter or semi finals? Not really much to get excited about. There will be lots of streaming in our household.

      1. David has written “SBS has announced Free to Air rights for the UEFA Euro 2016 comprising 8 Live matches, the Final and a daily highlights show from June”.

I took this as being 8 live matches, then the final. 9 matches in total.

Press release reads “The coverage for Euro 2016 will see 8 live matches from the knockout stage, including the final…”

Yeah I should read more carefully, there’s actually only 8 games being broadcast, not 9. And yes, the knock out phase is from quarter finals on. So does that mean none of the group stage games will be broadcast? Either way, and this was my point, of the 50 odd games being played we’re only getting a tiny number broadcast in their entirety.

    1. *Eight* matches from the knockout stage *including* the final; ie 4 QF, 2 SF, 1 Final, and 1 playoff for 3rd. So you’ll only need to stream the group matches.

I’d like to see more too, but SBS has to fork out the big bux like everyone else.

      1. The funding is there just get rid of all those extra SBS channels that no one watches like SBS two and three and all those radio stations when you look at the figures not many watching or listening then there would be more money for programming that interest the masses like international football

        1. The radio stations are the only bit that is fulfilling SBS’s charter, and are fairly cheap. The lifestyle channel probably makes a bit of money.

Only 8 games. I watched even minute of Euro 96 (only 31 games back then).
