This week The Feed presents a special half hour episode that looks at Australia’s “rainbow families” and how the Family Court faces decisions based on traditional families.

It will air on Thursday night.

Also this week Lee Lin Chin’s forthcoming appearance on ABC’s Playschool (Monday), and Does the media accurately represent Muslims? ‘Speed Date a Muslim’ airs on Wednesday.

More than ever, Australian families are coming in different shapes and sizes.

Same-sex or single parent families formed with the help of a donor who is known, and in many cases, a friend, are no longer unusual.

But what the stats and surveys don’t show is the emotional journey that many of these ‘rainbow families’ are going on – and the way in which Australia’s current family law is grappling to legitimise and protect them, as some disputes make it to the Family Court.

Once before a court, things can become complicated, as judges make decisions based on laws that largely still reflect traditional families.

In this special half hour edition of The Feed, we meet families with children born out of friendships.

This Thursday 7 April we find out what makes some of them so successful, and how the family courts are grappling to deal with those that aren’t.

Monday – Thursday at 7:30pm, on SBS 2.

  1. Lee Lin Chin’s appearance on the show tomorrow night is a greatly timed coincidence after being nominated for two Logies this afternoon 🙂
