Chief Content Officer for Netflix Ted Sarandos says Netflix is “absolutely” open to pitches from Australian producers.
So far Netflix is yet to commission an original Australian-based drama.
“I have friends constantly asking me about Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries; when the next season is coming,” he told Fairfax.
“Australia has such a rich production infrastructure and great talent, both in front of, and behind, the camera. There’s no reason we would not [commission] original shows for Australia.”

Well already the European Union has proposed that streaming services be brought into the European content production rules and the heat will continue here for these companies to have minimum Australian content rules as is the case with free to air and Pay television. When this momentum builds you’ll suddenly see Netflix announce local commissions in order to thwart any legislation to enshrine original local content. Cynical but true.
further regulation of a private company is not what is needed. good ideas and concepts are the way to go.
I’d like to see them offer something different in their originals. It just seems like a constant stream of dark or quirky. A bit more variety couldn’t hurt.
