Alfie Arcuri single misses ARIA Top 50

Despite winning the Nine series, The Voice singer gets a very rude lesson in the reality of music charts.

Bad news for The Voice with Alfie Arcuri’s debut single Cruel failing to make the ARIA Top 50 Singles, landing at #89.

Noise11 reports it was sitting at no. 139 on the iTunes chart late Saturday afternoon, which will result in an even worse result next week. The song failed to go higher than #24 on the real time iTunes chart, after it was debuted on the show’s grand final last Sunday.

The song was written by J.R. Rotem (Gwen Stefani), Lindy Robbins (Jason Derulo), Sermstyle (Flo-Rida), JHart (Justin Bieber) and Xplicit (Fifth Harmony), but reportedly with no clear artist in mind.

But it’s onwards an upwards for the nice-guy singer, who will release an album in coming weeks. He also scored a $100,000 prize and a new car from the Nine series.

Shoulda let him sing a ballad……

  1. With the exception of the first Voice winner, Karisse Eden, has there been any other winners who have been successful on the charts? I remember last years winner also failed miserably. Australia doesn’t have enough ‘talent’ to justify so many talent shows. Same goes for all those damn cooking shows we have on right now.

  2. I watched The Voice all the way through for the first time this year. Mostly because my favorites kept getting through until the end. But I’m one of those who wouldn’t have a clue about buying the music outside of a cd.

  3. The Voice has a large amount of older demos watching who don’t buy songs on iTunes (on the most part) and don’t stream via Spotify etc. I have family in their 60s / 70s who loved Alfie, but wouldn’t buy a digital single but would buy a physical product if it was available.

Saying that, Alfie’s song is the best Voice related single released, and even though I didn’t watch this season, I enjoy the single and bought it off iTunes.

    1. Simple, they use a major pentatonic scale. One person writes down where all the C notes go, another the Ds, a third E, and the other two G and A respectively. The lyrics are written by a computer program.
