Long-running ABC science show Catalyst is set to undergo a major revamp in 2017.
According to The Australian, a spokesman for the ABC confirmed the 15 year old program will take a ‘new direction’ next year.
“The ABC can confirm Catalyst will be part of the ABC schedule in 2017 and acknowledges the importance of the program for the scientific community and audiences in general,” he said.
“The ABC consistently reviews programs at the end of each year to ensure it maintains its commitment to audience needs and expectations.
“After more than fifteen years ABC Television is reviewing Catalyst’s format and production model. ABC management will respond to that review in due course.”
Media Watch has tweeted that the program will still be produced in-house and denied speculation that 11 staff will go.
As yet there is no official word on presenter Dr. Maryanne Demasi, who was stood down from July until September following a second breach of ABC editorial policies in reports.
ABC Director of Television Richard Finlayson recently told TV Tonight, “She’s not at work at the moment. I don’t think she has any stories left for this year,” he said.
“She’s still part of Catalyst.”

Catalyst needs to be saved. It’s ridiculous that the ABC is outsourcing it.
er… “the program will still be produced in-house”.
‘A new direction? Astrology? Bible thumping creationism?-it’s a science magazine show folks!
