Basil Zempilas favourite for Sunrise?

Perth-based presenter tipped for Friday - Sunday duties in Sydney.

Perth-based presenter Basil Zempilas is emerging as the hot favourite for a plum vacancy at Sunrise / Weekend Sunrise.

Industry chatter has him earmarked to fill Fridays on Sunrise as David Koch pulls back to a 4 day week, and replace Andrew O’Keefe on Weekend Sunrise.

Zempilas, who has already made hosting shifts on the breakfast show, is best known for sporting coverage with Seven, hosting Perth’s Telethon, and radio 6PR duties.

He is well-regarded by Seven management. But a 3 day week on the East Coast is likely to impact on his weekday duties at 6PR in the West.

One source told TV Tonight his appointment is already “signed, sealed and delivered.”

On Friday Andrew O’Keefe announced his departure from Weekend Sunrise after 12 years.

  1. I commented about Basil’s commentary of AFL in the TV Lounge mid-year. He just could not get the players names correct. It wasn’t even a one-off from week to week, since it would happen on average about 3-4 times per week. He has a great voice… & that’s about it. For his sake, the producers on Sunrise will need to be at the top of their game.

  2. Matt Doran?

Who has also filled-in a lot, seems more natural and suited to the role and most of all now lives in Sydney (originally from Melbourne via Adelaide) and doesn’t have Seven News Perth sport, Seven Sport and radio to also fulfill (only occasional Sunday Night filed reports).

Seems an easy choice to me.
