Networks write to AACTAs board

Seven and Foxtel both wrote to board urging them to take a stand, following media headlines.

Seven and Foxtel wrote a letter to the Australian Academy of Cinema, Television and Arts ahead of tomorrow’s event, urging them to take a stand on Geoffrey Rush.

The Daily Telegraph reports Foxtel boss Peter Tonagh and Seven’s director of programming Angus Ross wrote to AACTA / AFI chief executive Damian Trewhella following headlines last week.

“Both of our companies take very seriously the importance of having a safe and trusted work environment for our employees. The reason for this letter is to ensure that any organisation with which we are associated takes the same approach and adheres to the same principles,” they wrote.

Foxtel exec Brian Walsh also resigned from the AACTA board.

On the weekend Rush stood aside until issues have been resolved.

“This decision has not been made lightly. However, in the current climate of innuendo and unjustifiable reporting, I believe the decision to make a clean break to clear the air is the best for all concerned,” Rush said in a statement.

Last month AACTAs said in a statement, “AACTA’s aim is to recognise, encourage, promote and celebrate film and television excellence in Australia. We also recognise our role in working with our members in upholding standards in our industry that we can all be proud of, including the provision of a safe and respectful workplace.”

Rush has rejected allegations.
