“Petty”: Ex-Studio 10 producer edited out of Xmas special

Merry Xmas, you're on the cutting room floor.

When former Studio 10 producer Rob McKnight sat down to watch the last show he ever did for TEN yesterday he got a rude surprise: he was edited out of the Christmas special.

Recorded several weeks ago, the Christmas special became the final straw for TEN after backstage tension. Talk of an on-set incident involving cast saw McKnight fired from the show.

He later added, “Yep, kids were dropped from the show. Just remember that when @channelten try to sell themselves as the ‘family’ network.”

McKnight recently instigated legal action against the network for breach of contract, telling media he was a loyal worker for 4.5 years.

TEN previously indicated, “We do not comment publicly on the termination of any employee.” Nor presumably Scrooge-like editing either.

  1. Probably the best case of a TV network having to eat humble pie over sacking someone came in 1994 when Nine sacked Rex Mossop on the Saturday before the NRL Grand Final. Rex had abused members of the public during a store promo. The problem was that Nine had already recorded a six hour marathon featuring every past Grand Final which had Rex, Paul Vautin and Peter Sterling hosting and was due to air from midnight that night until 6AM next morning. Nine couldn’t edit Rex out so the show had to go to air as it was recorded. I could just imagine Rex at home watching it thinking he had the last laugh.

  2. Remember this article has been taken from News Corp. The Murdoch empire that missed out on Ten. Upset about not being in a Christmas clip….there is more to life ?

    1. Of course. But this story is about editing from Xmas special only, not incidents surrounding sacking. Where a producer is going public I am keen to file, and TEN did not respond to earlier requests. Details will emerge in court case if it isn’t settled before (as I expect it will be).

  3. I think it’s fairly standard, regardless of how or why an employee leaves, they’re basically wiped from the organisation, at my work it’s called ‘end dated’ which means from that date your login, pass etc etc are disabled and everyone moves on

  4. Why would TEN not edit out somebody who is no longer working for them? Totally justified. And why would a Producer be shown in a promo anyway. Rob needs to decide if he is on air talent or working behind the scenes. Being a voice from the control room whilst on-air just does not cut it. Also – I have nothing against Rob….but it does appear to me (as an once-a-week viewer) Studio 10 was becoming a bit stale and predicable, but since moving to the new set it has more variety of guests.

    1. Why would they edit Rob out is my question. The majority of viewers wouldn’t know who he is or be aware of his situation, so I don’t think editing him out serves any purpose other than to rub salt into the wound.

But no-one really knows what’s happening for sure. I just hope the situation can be resolved for Rob’s sake – I’m sure Ten will be fine regardless under their new CBS overlords.

    1. Well, Rob would obviously disagree, given he’s filing a wrongful termination suit.

They may have had what they deemed as a reason for firing him, but whether that reason was lawful is another matter.

    2. If you fire someone these days, it has to be for a very good reason. There is no way a big company like Ten will get rid of someone for a petty reason because they know how much flak they will cop
