The Big Bang channel

It's the show networks love to marathon, unless the other guy has it.

It’s the show that networks love to screen ad nauseam….

On Sunday 9GO! will screen the entire first season of The Big Bang Theory in a marathon from 12:30pm – 8:30pm.

Nine recently reacquired the rights to earlier seasons after Seven swooped on them in 2015.

Prior to nabbing the eps, Seven would often point out how many episodes Nine would run in any given week. Nine repaid the favour by pointing out the irony its rival did likewise once it got its fingers on them.

Now Nine has it back it has 17 episodes screening this Sunday, as a programming stunt before Young Sheldon launches on Monday. To be fair, Seven hasn’t raised it as an observation as yet, but readers have.

It’s clearly a show that brings in a loyal audience, seemingly happy to binge endless episodes they have watched time and again. Nine can only hope Young Sheldon is half as successful.

  1. I agree with using multi channels for marathon airing of shows. The problem i see that the networks don’t have the balls or the imagination to do it. I wold love to see supernatural night on Eleven. Charmed, Supernatural, Buffy and if TEN have access to it Angel. all those shows would fit the Youth demo and people who were young at the time they aired orignally would watch it. I do think ONE needs to be nmore of a Male genre channel it kind of is not. I think TEN should bring back SportsTonight on ONE. ALso having male types shows. Crime/ procedural shows are ok but they need more. I personally would like to see 7 use the Simpsons the same way TEN did. I would have a ball if i was a programmer.

    1. Only problem with Eleven is that Neighbours is there to stay and will be a year round show now as of this year as per: https://tvtonight.com.au/2017/10/neighbours-poised-to-screen-all-year-round-after-new-uk-deal.html

However, could still do it on there I guess with Neighbours being the half hour break people for some or just do it on weekends or from 7pm to midnight. I agree ONE needs to be fixed up bit of a hotch potch of a channel now, kind of why I thought they could do it on there. Advertising wise I can see it go something like: One Show, One Season, One Day on ONE and you could do each day with a different show.

It’s kind of amazing when you look at shows that would work and how many of them are shows TEN have. Plus of course with the rebooted Rosanne just around the corner there’s the chance to take it back to where it all started for TEN.

  2. The difference is that this is being promoted as the whole season, in order, start to finish. The block of back-to-back shows in the past made no such promises. You never knew what season it was, whether the episodes were in order, and then often they would start repeating after four or so episodes.

I would love 9Go to do the same for The Middle (but not the first season – already overdone).

  3. I think this is a great test and reminds me of what Foxtel channels did when I was growing up. They would run Slayerfest (Buffy marathons), Simpsons etc. over long weekends. If this is successful for 9GO they could look at running something similar on other public holidays with multiple seasons. Seven could do the same with Modern Family.

    1. Slayerfest was one of the others I was thinking of, like how Buffy has just started on Eleven (4 eps in), it would be a good choice for TEN to do this with, along with some of their other titles like Supernatural. If they could get their hands on Grimm that’d be another, not too mention the Star Trek franchise they have on tap. All up they have a few on hand that would work if they still have USA Network shows like Psych and lead into the Movie, White Collar, Monk and etc., etc., could do it on ONE with ease.

  4. 9Go!’s year-to-date share is down this year. Could be more of a blatant ratings ploy? Knowing how well it did for 7flix, getting that channel over 200k very early in its existance, even 4% shares at times, was unbelievable for a brand new channel, not available in many markets at the time. Big Bang’s demographics pulling power is the real key. Something 9Go! dominates in, but that’s one channel. Seven have two demo successful multi-channels (7mate and 7flix).

  5. Yeah I don’t mind it either, have often wondered if one would do it with a secondary channel, TEN could do it with dramas better than the other channels as they have more and ONE would be the better choice over Eleven.

Was thinking about it recently as well with the Commonwealth Games coming up, I remember when Fox8 used to run The Simpsons for 2 weeks against the Olympics. Was thinking it was 24/7, however they may have stopped for WWE RAW and Smackdown and then continued on with The Simpsons.

    1. I’d like a Simpsons pop-up channel on Foxtel running all 28 seasons they currently have access to. Even better would be to have commercials only between episodes rather than during.
