Alexander was born in Minsk, Belarus. At the age of 5, he and his family moved to Oslo. He learned to play violin at an early age, and it was not long before he started performing on stage. In 2006, he won Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation’s talent competition Kjempesjansen (The Big Break) with his own jazz inspired composition, Foolin’.

Alexander Rybak became a household name across Europe after winning the Grand Final of the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest for Norway with the song Fairytale. With a total of 387 points, his victory marked the highest recorded score in the history of the Contest at that time. Fairytale went on to top the charts in many European countries, and the follow-up album, Fairytales, was released in 25 countries.
