United by music, except when it isn’t….

“We regret that some delegations at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö didn’t respect the spirit of the rules," says EBU.

What a week it was at Eurovision -disqualifications, booing, harassment of artists and journalists, withdrawals of spokespeople, crew complaints, flag bans….

All over a song contest held together by the theme United by Music.

Eurovision was once renowned for political bloc voting, but in 2024 the fractures split much wider.

The European Broadcasting Union has released a statement regarding delegation behavior at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

Following a week of controversy the European Broadcasting Union has released a statement:

“We regret that some delegations at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö didn’t respect the spirit of the rules and the competition both onsite and during their broadcasts.

“The EBU’s governing bodies will, together with the heads of delegations, review the events surrounding the ESC in Malmö to move forward in a positive way and to ensure the values of the event are respected by everyone.

“Individual cases will be discussed by the event’s governing body, the Eurovision Song Contest Reference Group made up of representatives from participating broadcasters, at its next meeting.”

That means some repercussions could still be coming.

Lucky that in 2025 the event will be held in neutral Switzerland, I guess?

  1. This year was a mess

Many of the acts were fun and awesome one of the better years, but it was hard to fully watch given the controversies.

    1. Completely disagree all the acts were watchable no matter what was going on. The show is based on music and the voting showed that.

  2. A lot of the issues were self-inflicted by the EBU. I hope questions are being asked of management. Double standards, poor communication and accountability, lack of conviction in their own policy and principles everywhere. It was always going to be an emotionally charged, controversial and difficult year, they seemed so unprepared.
