The Project v Sunrise: “Commercial TV at its worst”

The Project managing editor takes issue with a Hot Topic panel discussion about welfare on Sunrise.

TV news shows appear to have ignited a social media feud….

The Project‘s managing editor Tom Whitty has taken a dig at Sunrise on social media this morning after a Hot Topic discussion on a proposal by the Greens to introduce a universal basic income as a “safety net” for everyone, regardless of their employment status at a cost of $254B.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale will speak at the National Press Club today, calling for a ‘People’s Bank’, to better support first-time home buyers with low-interest government loans.

On Sunrise a panel hosted by Sam Armytage scoffed at the proposal, with 3AW host Tom Elliot and Smooth FM host Ron Wilson.

“Who’s going to pay for it?” Armytage asked, with both agreeing the cost was prohibitive.

“Great idea in theory, never work in practice” said Elliott.

But The Project‘s Tom Whitty took to social media saying Di Natale had been misrepresented.

The Sunrise discussion follows a criticism of a recent Hot Topics discussion on Indigenous Australians. Seven News boss Craig McPherson recently told TV Tonight, “Some topics probably require a little bit more depth.”

He also conceded morning TV was a frequent trigger for media headlines.

“It’s not easy for Breakfast television where there are 3 or 4 hours of rolling TV and they have to exude personality, have an opinion, be engaging and not be bland,” he said.

  1. The Project can talk though. They’re just as bad if not worse than Sunrise with their bias. However this Surnise segment has always been bad. Sunrise needs a massive refresh. Hosts and everything.

  2. The Project might like explaining Greens policies to voters but that’s not the job of the media. They’re not a mouthpiece for politicians. Proposals should be scrutinised. The Project ratings might improve if they take a more centrist approach to the news and not come in from the left wing a bit.

    1. I am not normally a poster to TVTonight but I had to reply to this comment. This is a ridiculous statement. Take The Project out of it. How can a media outlet make opinion about something they are incorrectly fact basing on? Proposals should be scrutinised but they need to be looked at thoroughly. Informing the general public incorrectly is wrong and in my opinion should be illegal.

      1. The media outlet didn’t make an opinion. The presenter did and she is entitled to. It’s Sunrise — an infotainment program. Not entirely hard news. The presenter asked how the proposal would be paid for. That’s a legitimate question. Perhaps she should get the Greens on to explain it more?

      2. The Project is the last to complain about media personalities spruiking their opinions on tv.. the project is 1 hour every night of opinions.

  3. This just proves Sunrise has learnt nothing from the incident a few weeks ago about Indigenous Children – and how appallingly that entire matter was handled. And now they do this. Sam, first rule of journalism – if you are going to use a source, make sure they are relevant or connected to the topic, rather than a gaggle of mouthpieces. Sunrise is beyond awful viewing – thank god for Virginia and Michael on the ABC.

  4. They all showed their ignorance & obviously didn’t do any research on the topic. But I’d expect that from 3AW. It’s not a radical idea or even Di Natalie’s. Finland have been doing it quite successfully. Maybe they could have had someone from there to explain it to them instead of shooting their mouth’s off on something they know nothing about. There’s been calls for a universal basic income here for quite a while.

    1. “Finland have been doing it quite successfully. ”

No!Finland is running a 2 year trial upon 2000 people who were initially unemployed. That is not a universal basic income.

Be careful when accusing people with a sentence like, “They all showed their ignorance & obviously didn’t do any research on the topic.”

    2. Does the militant left realise a universal basic income means every adult (including multi millionares) receive the same amount of money per week.

  5. “Giving people with jobs money is the perfect way to compensate those who lose their jobs.” said no one, ever. If Tom Whitty wants to plug the universal basic income (which like communism would fail due to human nature, even if it could be initially afforded) he needs to do a far better job.
