Vale: Verne Troyer

US actor Verne Troyer, best known for Austin Powers movies, has died, aged 49.

He died on Saturday but no cause of death was given.

“It is with great sadness and incredibly heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today,” his family said in a statement.

“Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh. Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible.

“Verne hoped he made a positive change with the platform he had and worked towards spreading that message every day.

“Over the years he’s struggled and won, struggled and won, struggled and fought some more, but unfortunately this time was too much,” it continued.

“Depression and Suicide are very serious issues. You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside. Be kind to one another. And always know, it’s never too late to reach out to someone for help.”

Troyer was taken to hospital earlier this month for unspecified treatment. The actor spoke about his alcohol addiction during another hospital stay a year ago.

In addition to his breakout role as the “Mini-Me” in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Troyer was also known for playing Griphook in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

TV credits included MADtv, Two and a Half Men, Scrubs, Boston Public and Trailer Park Boys.
